You can do A LOT with $1000 in the trumpet world, and good luck on your project!

Your band director sounds like a doorknob, and thats putting it lightly. A couple of years ago before I got my Martin Committee I was playing a Maestro Intermediate. I have been playing for 15 years and have 'the sound' and when people were blown away by my sound when I was playing the Maestro, and asked me what I played, I said a Maestro Intermediate. You should have seen the expression on thier faces! They were probably thinking you play a piece of junk like that and you sound that good? Just goes to show its the musician not the equipment.

As a student long ago I bought old used horns and I'd refrain from telling a student from buying a new horn untill he/she is sure that what they want to persue. Buying from a local dealer is a good idea but here is a GREAT example of a place that you can but great student horns for under $300.

Martin Committee makes the greatest horns as far as I am concerned and you might find an old beater of a Committee on Ebay for $100 to $150. With $850 to $900 in restoration you can do A LOT! Remember Van, your end result is going to be to restore a horn to new condition, so start out with a beat up great horn with the intention of returning it to its former glory. Are you doing the restoration yourself or hiring an outside professional? If its the latter heres some guys that do GREAT work. This one lists prices

If you just want to buy a used horn on Ebay for $1000 you can get a GREAT vintage or new Martin used Committee, and tell your band director where to put his little B&S intermediate theorie

However, I just don't think the man is correct in assuming what comes out of the WWBW catalogue is the absolute best deal available.

Thats why I have to create this booklet. I cannot stand for people like that to push young players into the horns that are immediately available, when they could have done better.

Why just do something when it can be done better? Isn't that the whole ideal behind music?

While I'm thinking about it, should I get a section for buying a good-priced flugel, cornet, and different pitched trumpets?

The above sounds very much like it is out here in Texas. Out of curiousity, when SHOULD one challenge a band director? Or school system? If "they" truly have the child's best interest at heart, shouldn't they be made aware of the distinct possibility that there are other choices? I sell a great horn, which easily rivals that found at our local music stores, for about $500, yes, $500 less than the local music store sells theirs! Shouldn't the students / parents be presented with this information to make an informed decision?

I went through a 17-page request for proposal process, that would have allowed me to present my instruments a beginning student instrument nights within the local school system. Price, quality and service were their three main factors. I have visited my local competition - many times. Without a doubt, (yes, in my personal opinion), the competition can not even compete on a price or quality level. Now, what they mean by service...

Hopefully, I can get them to tell me what they meant by that because, for as yet an unknown reason, I was not "picked by the directors" to display my instruments at beginning student programs.

Just frustrated with the system...

For some reason, though I notice that the opinion is beginning to change, if it isnt a Strad, Xeno, etc. , then it isnt worth your time. If it isnt out of the WWBW book, it isnt worth a damn. Its ridiculous. After I get some time to do this, I will try and find a way to get it advertised online like crazy...

Now you know why I had so much fun when I beat kids playing Strads with my "inferior" Omega. Drove 'em nuts, including the judges. I loved it.

I've always loved the stories of the kids on the beat up old horns with no lacquer, beating the heck out of the players with the shiny gold and silver horns.

In fact, the biggest marketing tool in the trumpet world today is "Intermediate" horns. Basically, you get a student horn, add a 1st valve slide ring and give it silver with gold trim.

You also tack on $500-700 to the price....
