There are two catagories of pedal tones, one where we lip the tone down (for example starting with a low [123] f# and lipping it down to f, then playing the same f with the 1st valve) and the true pedal tone starting on pedal c.
In the case of the later it seems that the voodoo-trumpet/mouthpiece-balance has a huge influence on ease of pedal c, and is a Vulgano criteria for testing a mouthpiece.

In the Arturo Sandoval Method Books there is a Pedal Tone exercise very similar to the Maggio....I believe its in book two. It also has a CD of Arturo playing the exercises so you could match his tone.
