Re: Preferred form of vibrato

I find it's easier with the jaw than with the tongue though, but I second what rowuk said.

Try learning them all (as well as no vibrato--very important!) and use them musically.

Have fun!
uuh, I think the one of pitch (frequency modulation) is called vibrato.
The one of volume (amplitude modulation) is called tremolo.

Using both. Different situations command different technique.
I can absolutely control my vibrato. I can vibrate fast, slow, or not at all. My vibrato can be wide or tight. I am in control of my vibrato. I use a hand vibrato. I never quite understood the bias against this vibrato. The horn does not shake.

Same here actually. I use hand vibrato and and quite fond of it... I just hear so much about the jaw vibrato being much more benficial in the long run, so I've beeb having at it but just can't get it right. I can't "feel" the vibrato if it's not coming from my hand.

Re: Preferred form of vibrato

I just shake the trumpet or if I am singing, I shake my head to get vibrato. I have not been playing the trumpet long so only I ask out of interest.

What technique is used for Mariachi, BTW?

I am pretty sure that Mariachi, or like Rafael Mendez vibrato is a fast jaw vibrato.

I use jaw vibrato on trombone and euphonium,
slide vibrato on jazz trombone,
and hand vibrato with a trumpet.
With low brass mouthpieces, you have much less of a chance of losing the note with jaw vibrato, just because there is more room. With a trumpet mouthpiece, at least in my case, I like to be careful, and hand vibrato sounds great, in about any setting that needs it.

Re: Preferred form of vibrato

yes Mariachi is a very fast very wide jaw vibrato. I think the jaw vibrato can be developed into many different musical aspects (ex. Classical, Jazz, Mariachi) If you can hear what your doing, you can relate it to what your playing.
