Re: Shortening First Valve Slide

I always noticed how incredibly low the third slide on my bach makes everything. Where do I get it fixed??

I got mine done by Norbert Boepple in Ditzingen, Germany--excellent work and free beer!

Mr. Wilt,

Charlie Melk will make you one here in the States. I know Mark Niehaus has had them done on at least one of his horns.

You will have to dig a little bit, it is not as comfortable as TM!
I remember something about a size 24 bore or something like that for the C trumpet. Dave Monette is onto something completely different however.
I think the best description about what can happen in a mouthpiece is here:
Welcome at the pages of the IWK (Institute of Musical Acoustics)
click on research and then on mouthpiece forms
You find out quickly that a mouthpiece can compensate for a lot of trumpet manufacturing sins............
They are speaking about the throat, not the backbore. But some people like a diferent backbore too. I prefer the 7 backbore for orchestra. And 25 or 24 throat. Someone had played with a 22 throat...
Vincent Bach said that the mouthpieces were expected to be drilled and fit the player's need. Because of that the standard is a little too small. This standard works good for a Bb (not for every player of course). With a bigger throat is possible to manipulate better some notes...

Some players (I' not sure if Mr. Herseth too) have played the best with the 7 backbore (standard on a B piece), so that in combination with a "all" B mouthpiece they have a C cup with a "B" backbore too.

Curiosly, the Schilke Symphony models are something in this direction...

Back to the topic, I think modern Elkhart Bachs doesn't have a 1 slide so long, so for some horns it isn't necessary to cut it. You are expected to tune 12 fingerings pushing out the slide. D is a note always some of flat, because is the natural third of Bb (natural 3rds are flat compared to the tempered ones). So is a choice of the player, if he can or want to have it some little flat or not. In the rotary horns, traditionally, 1st slide can't move. Because of that the slide is a compromise with the D usually too flat. Hans Gansch worked with Schagerl in a dopple trigger that push out both 1st and 3er slides. In these horns the 1st slide shorter.

For the some reason that D could be too flat, F is too high (specially if you have a too high G).

Obviously is better to have short slide that a too long one. But the right solution is a choice of the player.

An interesting addition is one that Will Spencer has done on his (and a few others') instrument - a push me pull you spring on the first valve which keeps it in the right place for the majority of playing yet can be pushed in slightly for the relevant notes.
I wish I had this for middle E and E flat...though mine are quite OK compared to "normal" VB models...

Re: Shortening First Valve Slide

You guys are overloading me! Now I know why I have to practice two weeks with my Bach C in order hear the right pitches.

I had a Blessing C that had pitch problems from fourth line D to high D. Now I know why.

It used to be just a bicycle ride away, and so, yeah! He always has fun new stuff to try out, old restorations, and yes, free beer! He's also a true master, who can do anything a customer asks for -- he will shake his head, sometimes, but he'll do it. He had one of those "cheap, fast and good -- the customer may choose any two out of three" signs. I always opted for cheap and fast, because he'd do a good job anyway.
