When you have that, start with a full house all the way up to two close and back down. Ya foller? ML |

| Forte User | Re: Simply excruciating Well, I finally had some time today to give it a real try. Starting with half at 88 (4 notes on down beat and 4 on upbeat) proved a bit too fast for me, so I brought it down to half=80. I found the sound start to thin at about Ab/G# above the staff, and had to pause momentarily at around Bb (3rd line) on the way back down. I rested a bit, and began kicking the tempo up 1 bpm, with breaks in between. Target is 88 for this week, 90 next. By 84, my starting artics were quite a bit cleaner, but again, around 3rd space C or 3rd line Bb or so I had to re-start since my tongue started to get a bit loagey feeling.

| Re: Simply excruciating I hope its not presumptious for me to offer a few suggestions; It seems that tongue tension creeps in while ascending, or articulation in the upper register exposes this tension. In order to minimize that tension; I work into the exercise with a few preparatory stages: 1. Play slurred, keeping tone even throught the 2 octaves. a mental reminder of what the tone should be. 2. Play as quarter notes legato tongue as above 3. As before with a more pointed marcato attack; keep tone consistant with slurred. 4. repeated eigth notes legato, then staccato. 5. finally introduce the double tongue repeated sixteenths. Schlossberg page 34 #97 has similar requirements, and the preceding exercise #95 sets us up for it. -Ellis |

![]() | Re: Simply excruciating Great Manny! I am always preaching soft or softer dynamics for practice and I usually get the look that says "as loud as you play????" You really will discover muscles you did not know existed in your face! Thanks! Last edited by Bob Odneal; 02-15-2007 at 08:58 AM. Reason: spelling error |
