Re: Tips for teaching...and more

There is no substitute for experience. The longer you do something the better you get at it. Just because I could play well I believed I would be a good teacher. Looking back I was doing my best but didn't have the knowledge. I learnt more from teaching primary school kids and those at the the most basic level than teaching someone who could already play well. If you want to be a better teacher my advice would be to talk to teachers who have experience teaching the basics. You'll learn alot that you can apply to the more experienced student and develop those techniques yourself. Eveyone has something different to offer and we should all learn from each other.

Thanks Huff-Puff. I'm starting to learn this now. I have one private student that's coming to me now also. He's been playing classical and brass-band all his life, and now wants to learn to improvise. I'm having quite a bit of fun going back to the beginning of my first year and doing a little re-learning myself.
