Sounds like a combination of: bluster, ignorance of jazz (or inappropriate denigrating of same), unwarranted arrogance, and snobbery.

Two words on the classical vs. jazz thing: Wynton Marsalis. He did both with style at a level most of us only dream about. Did you think he 'parted the waters' between classical and jazz based on something as basic as tone? Obviously not. Marsalis could do the Hummel on his jazz horn better than you or I could do it on his classical horn. And visa versa.

On a more important note: who is the best person to decide the quality of your tone? You? Or an octagenarian french horn player with a snobbish classics prejudice? Beef up the self-respect chops, my friend.
