The Valsalva Manoeuvre occurs every time you breathe out against pressure, so you're right it must happen when you're playing the trumpet (or any other wind instrument), whether it be correctly or otherwise, and whether you play high, middle or low. The higher the note the higher the pressure and therefore the more likely you are to experience a drop in blood flowing to the brain. I have to say I would never advise a patient to give up a wind instrument, or even playing high, loud and long, just because of worries about cerebral blood flow. But I might if this was combined with several actual episodes of faints or dizziness. And I certainly would if someone knew they had an aneurysm.

The real risks to health from being a trumpet player ? Smoking, or being around smokers, and drinking too much. Oh, and being attacked by unsympathetic listeners.

I'm experiencing some of the same symptons like a fall in blood pressure, feeling light headed while playing, oh yah and last week i almost fainted in class in the middle of a song when playing the high A's. This has been happening for a couple months now when my band director gave us a new piece to play at contest which is now next saturday and i'm like so stressing out about it, and really I thought it might be that I need to practice more. I'm not sure.

Doc, Bud, Maurice, Diz, Adolph Scherbaum, Manny Klein and many others have had long careers blowing into the dangerous instrument, the trumpet.

Hi. That's my British accent. 'Maneuver' is the American spelling so you're right that if you want US pages you should use that. Either is correct.

PS light-headness may be related simply to over-breathing (which drops your carbon dioxide levels). Especially if - like me - you tend to breathe too fast and shallow when nervous.

I recall a tabloid article about an Italian trumpet player named Ugo Solari whose head exploded during a trumpet solo, showering the front tables with brain matter. I think Terry Warburton claimed responsibility for that one.

Leon Merian was involved in a glaucoma study. He found that there was a significant increase in intraocular pressure when playing in the upper register. I believe that he published an article about it in the ITG Journal a few years ago. That didn't stop him from playing well past his 83rd birthday.
