I think it wants to be a Bb/A trumpet, but when I remove the middle slide and play middle A my tuning device set at A=440 shows a G# being played. If it is a Bb/A trumpet shouldn't it play A=440 like a piano?

Your tuner is probably in concert pitch, so a 1-2 fingered A should be a G on the tuner. Your horn is about 1/2 step sharp, probably in old high pitch. Not much you can, or should do about it.
