How true! Virtually all freelance jobs come as a result of who we've played for, rather than who we've studied with.

It is just proof that credentials are not a deciding factor - recommendations are. If you want lessons and call Marvin Stamm and he says, I don't have any time but check out xxx - that means something. In the past, I have always gone "to the top" with my request for lessons. Sometimes it worked, often I was deferred to some other AWESOME teacher. In 40 years of playing, I have only had one teacher that didn't work out.
The same goes with recommendations for gigs. If Marvin can't and says call xxx, that has weight!
I am usually wary of a three page list of teacher credentials. Every good teacher has their own playing style and leaves some stamp on each of the students. Running to tons of teachers to me means that the student is going wide instead of deep. The playing is often the same way - lacking depth!
Same with gigs. You get hired to do a gig with someone famous one time-put it on your resume. You got paid, it's a gig, it's legit.
As for wide versus deep:the zen guys say you can get further by digging one hole a hundred feet deep than by digging ten different ten-foot holes.

Thanks, Robert. I am making your suggested change to my biographical sketch.

Re: Where do we draw the line?

I wouldn't consider having one lesson with someone as having "studied" with them. To me, studying with someone involves at least TWO lessons. One where you get coaching and then you spend some time on it by yourself and bring it back to the person. Three days is enough to say you studied with someone (I would say).

Re: Where do we draw the line?

I've had lessons with many people but studied with 4. "Studied" to me means I saw them on a regular basis over an extended period of time. I've made appearances with many fine professional bands, but I've only "played" with two (1 for 8 years and the other for about 20). I have served as the guest conductor of at least 100 bands over the past 30-years, but only been the director of 3 of them.

I love the thought behind this thread because it is about honesty!
