![]() | Re: Who Is really good to listen to? I agree with all mentioned, but lets not leave out Sean Jones. His album "Kaleidescope" is awesome! Adam Rapa is quite the player, too. For smoother, more hybrid jazz/legit/pop whatever, Chris Botti has got some chops! Have fun listening!!

Wiki the Great American Songbook (GAS). Pick up some CD's, purchase a fake book (real book). Play lyrical. Ella did a lot of these songs Sinatra did too. Sarah Vaughn did a few Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt (her Nelson Riddle releases). The wiki article lays it all out. As far as trumpeters go, a logical starting point would probably be. Gillespie said of Armstrong: "No him, no me." Armstrong was a GROUNDBREAKER in jazz. Basic to innovative: Armstrong... go retrospective on this... compilations. Hello Dolly... Great 32 bar lead from a mature player. Nothing wasted. Speaks volumns in the trad vein. There's hundreds and a few respondents have pretty much covered the spectrum. I like many, but own few cds. I listen to melody. Here's a few I have been listening to lately. Harrell Vu (with Metheny) Dave Douglas (with Bill Frissel) Marsalis Miles Davis Botti (why not) Chet Baker Harry James I tend to go more for the 50's and 60's styles, quartets or other small settings. I used to have this album which consisted of Drums, Trumpet, and bass. It was called Red, Hot, and Blue. I can't remember the band but I think it was one of those small New Orleans bars which also sold records of whom ever was jamming on a particular night. That LP was really, really good. Anyway. I would keep it simple. NPR plays a lot of good stuff at night and on weekends. Tune in. I would stay clear of formatted FM or smooth jazz... it all sounds very similar to me.
