Try the Rod Franks Recording (CD Title: Saving Face) It is one of the best Arutunian Concerto recordings I gave ever heard. This is an arrangment (though very nice) for trumpet and wind orchestra. | |

| I'm going to second the Geoffrey Payne. He really blazes on all cylinders, and I believe, if my sources are correct, he plays the Artunian (and most everything else) on C. I own the Bibi Black recording, and there's nothing really wrong with it. I recommend that recording because the Pakhumatova and the Vainberg Etudes (I think that's what it's called) are wonderful pieces and it's valuable to have them in print. The Vainberg in particular is an undervalued piece--it is a very witty trip through trumpet orchestral excerpt history, while maintaining a real urgency and never once seeming cheesy for the quotation. Also, put aside the trumpet playing on the Bibi Black album (though I have no beef with it, I wouldn't pick it over Dok., but then again, that's no reason others shouldn't play it!) for a moment: the orchestral playing is very clean, as is the engineering, perhaps too clear for some tastes. But it's a great recording to learn the orchestral part from because it is quite easy to follow and the parts don't mush together. |

| I used to have a CD of Maurice Murphy playing this concerto and absolutely loved it. A very good performance among other very good performances of this work out there. |

| I don't think it's available any more but there was a recording on the Polyphonic label, highlights from the gala concert of the 1987 National Brass Band Championships (UK), and Rod Franks plays the Arutunian accompanied by the Brighouse and Rastrick brass band in an arrangement (of the orchestral accompaniment) made by Michael Antrobus. The band struggle somewhat in places but Rod Franks' playing is superb. Sumptuously lyrical when required and passionately powerful elsewhere with excellent phrasing throughout. Timofei Docschizer's account is awesome, but bearing in mind the recording I've mentioned is from a live concert, Rod Franks is up there for me, even if a brass band accompaniment is not your cup of tea. |

| New Friend | Re: Arutunian recording I believe that Hickman recording is an LP, right? Wasn't released as a CD. He is playing with the Colorado Symphony or Denver Symphony, somthing like that. |

| Re: Arutunian recording is the Hickman recording with the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado? I vaguely remember hearing the recording once. I wonder if it's still available? |

| Re: Arutunian recording There would be a simple way to find out - a few emails to HME and he might publish it once again. I would be VERY interested in hearing Dave performing this piece (after hearing him play the Haydn I rethought much about the way I play and teach that piece). |
