Bach Suite # 3

Can this be played on a Bb?

In 1947 and 1948 NBC played this under Toscanini and Ansermet. Would Glantz have played this on his Bb. Would he move down to third and allow Ray Crisara to play the first part on a smaller trumpet? Would NBC have brought in a staff player?

The playing on the Ansermet broadcast is indeed superb

I have the Marlboro recording under Casals. Perhaps Mr. Wise could shed some light on the equipment used there.

You can play the Bach Suite on a Bb trumpet, but I wouldn't want to. Players in the 40s had access to decent D trumpets. Caston played on Bach trumpets. I own one of his high trumpets. There also were Bessons around that were very good.
I can't imagine Glantz not playing the part.

Wilmer,

I played the 3rd Suite as part of the soundtrack for an early 80s comedy film called "A Little Sex" (no jokes from my wife, please). Steve Burns played 2nd and Jimmy Maxwell, of all people, played 3rd (on his Bb). It was an unusual sounding rendition. :)

I played part of the last movement of the Purcell Sonata and some other Purcell stuff in "Kramer vs. Kramer"

Nothing unusual there--the inversion of "a little sex" would be a major third, wouldn't it?
