Actually, leaving is exactly what is needed to effect change sometimes. Either way, it is not an easy decision.

I think if she wants the position she should audition for it. Promoting from within is not always the way to go when you want the best. After all, she is second chair. It doesn't mean she should automatically be promoted to concert master.

In St. Louis all positions are blind auditions. Everybody has to earn the chair.
Maybe Susan Slaughter can add to this?

Back in '72, Susan had to split the position with another player for an entire SEASON before they gave her the gig. That means she had to audition every other week, in front of everyone - colleagues, audiences, etc. - for 8-9 months before securing the job. Just a little FYI about that.

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

And if she would have been of the lesser species (male) I wonder if she would have had to split the position. Susan has bigger cojones than a lot of male players I've worked with.

(That is meant as a complement).

I had a "cojones" award given to me by my colleagues whilst in school and I took it as a compliment.

I wish her well. I really do.

As to the rest, looks like something is rotten in Denmark. I'm reminded of the exchange between Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains in Casablanca:

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?

Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.

Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

[aloud]

Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

So It Goes,

Richard

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

Very interesting read Derek. Thanks for poiting us there.

It sounds like if she does have "cajones"... it may be the reason she has been safe from him all this time... LOL

What a mess. And I thought the corporate world was bad... but then again an orchestra is a corporation. The final product is just much more beautiful !

Perhaps you should be aware of the rot in Denmark (no offense to the Danes).
