A quote from the before mentioned link:

"Preucil had the perfect résumé for the job. He was known worldwide as a virtuoso who wasn't afraid to take musical risks. He also owned a proud pedigree -- his father, William Sr., served as the former principal violist of the Detroit Symphony." (emphasis mine)

Haven't I been warning everybody for years now about violists? This is what can happen when they breed!

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

Derek- Thanks for the article. It adds a bunch of insight not present in the other article.

It's quite eye-opening. I guess that many of us still have this rosy-glasses picture of what working in a professional symphony is like. Nepitism, power struggles, cliques...we think they don't exist where the most sublime of products is made. Unfortunately, they apparantly do.

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

Wow. Just... wow.

That whole situation is pretty blatant. It's as if you were VP in a company and the CEO creates a Senior VP with the exact same job description that you now have to report to. And, oh by the way, how much do you want to bet the Senior VP (i.e. the "First Associate Concermaster") ends up being related to the CEO ("Concertmaster")?

Trying to fight for your job in a difficult or nearly impossible situation can be incredibly taxing and draining from an emotional point-of-view. It's a very personal decision and everyone needs to decide for themselves whether they are willing to pay the price that would be required. I can't fault Ms. de Pasquale's decision one bit, and considering the insular nature of the organization it might take several high-profile departures like hers before the orchestra management finally has no choice but to change.

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

I think this is probably very atypical, due to the whole surreal thing with William Preucil-- Derek's link provides the basic context. I sure wouldn't want to try to get into characterizing any of this.

Jerry,

Are you referring to Violists? or Detroiters?

Some of my best friends are from Michigan. (Not in, mind you, but from.) Aren't the Redwings the premier ice-hurly team?

Re: Ballsy, or just dumb?

Getting back to the original issue: considering the information available, no future employer would hold leaving the orchestra against her. So-it seems like a good move for her.
Whether or not the press has locked on to something and will try to dismount Preucil is another matter. The issues of nepotism and unfair audition practices are something that should concern the orchestra and union alike. Let's hope that they show real interest instead of covering up until it hurts the orchestra........
