Mark R.

I'll gladly give anyone the benefit of possibly having a bad day or even
just not wanting to be on an audition panel which is what I've done. My
mention of my experience at that particular CSO audition was in no way
intended to start a dump-on-Mark fest. I fully understand their response,
but it should have been kept silent until I (or anyone else) was out of the
room. Personally, I enjoy his playing and think he could fill the Principal
spot most adequately but that does not mean I have to simply accept
even momentary rudeness from him or anybody else of that stature.
Everyone can practice more tact and politeness, especially those we look
up to.

Paul

T-Paul,

Probably best to have kept that comment to yourself. If I was sitting on that committee, I too would expect some professionalism from each candidate. Not having the music, mute, the right mouthpiece, or trumpet is something that should not be an issue at this level. I'm sure that having to sit there for 6-7 days listening to trumpet auditions can be somewhat mind-numbing and a big test on anyone's patience. I can certainly understand someone being a little testy when they get a request like that.
Also, perhaps you did play well-or thought you did- and still got canned. But, don't assume that you got canned just because you felt you were somehow prejudiced because of your request. It probably didn't help you, but perhaps how you played the entire audition was indeed the main factor in not getting enough votes to go on.

Apparently, you had a bad warm-up room but so did others who came before you and after you using the same room. Deal with it.

Now, it is possible that Mark wins the principal audition. Do you think he wants someone in the section who just bad mouthed him in this forum? Of course, this is a free country and we all are entitle to our opinions, but some are best left unsaid.

Gents...

:!: I go back and forth between this forum and another one... (no names)... I have found myself coming here a little more often... but you know what... now I'm seeing too many similarities. :?

This kind of "back and forth" and reading WAY too much in between the lines is dangerous to say the least. :!:

TTKT, I didn't read the kind of tone you seem to have read from Paul. I didn't even once think he was saying he didn't get the job because he forgot his music. I simply read a description of how an audition was run from HIS perspective. Forgeting something happens even to the most anal retentive person... the topic was about how the audition was run. In this case, it's clear that the moderator should have cut him some slack... walked back out and asked to borrow a part from another auditioner and not exposed him to the panel. Plus, ALL auditioners should have been given a confortable room to warm up in. Yes, we all know to be prepared... but it is more about the playing, agree?

And, you have to admit that Mark's comments were in fact a bit unprofessional, regardless of how many times he had to hear the Haydn.

But you know what, the fact that I now know that Mark made such a comment does not exclude him from my "gentlemen's" list ... and as someone inappropriatly commented on his character as a christian, I would still consider him a christian (based on his faith) in spite of his humanity.

[quote]This isn't really a "badly run" situation, but the woman at the check-in table for Grant Park was not very nice. She had an accent (british, maybe austrailian - I can't remember).

Geerz man..theres a big difference between British an Australian LOL

The best run orchestra audition and the worst

In 1982 I auditioned for the 1st trpt. spot in the Philadelphia Orchestra. Supposedly, Frank Kaderabek was leaving the orchestra, and the rumor at the time was that he was being fired. When I went in to play for the committee, which was not behind a screen, there was Frank sitting there listening! The result of the auditions were that no one was hired, and Frank kept his job.(good for him, but a huge waste of time and $$ for all of us that went to Philly.)

I would say that Chicago seems to have the best run auditions in my experience. They plow through all of the prelims and schedule a totally different day weeks away for the finals, and pay your way to return. Very classy.

Manny Laureano has a spectacular aura about
PAUL!!!

Hey, how are you? What a pleasure to see you on the board here.

When I was a student at the Eastern Music Festival Paul was on the faculty orchestra and was a sectional coach of mine. He was also on the faculty quintet and an inspiration to me as an aspiring player. Paul is only a few years older than I which tells how talented he is to have gotten a nice job like that so young. While I was there he played a beautiful "Quiet City" for the final concert of the summer season.

The section was Rob Roy McGregor, John McElroy, and Paul McRandall. Paul has been the principal in North Carolina for, how long, Paul? I hope that you stay around this board as you would be another wonderful county to be heard from!

Great to see you on!
