Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

For the Charlier book why don't you try Hickeys.com they are very competent and if they have it in stock will ship rather quickly.

He said calling the school and asking what they may be looking for would be a smart move, but I'm truthfully unaware of HOW to ask.

Unfortunately The Charlier book has been on back order for sometime, and they called to see what the deal was. It will not be here in time, so I have to find some other means of getting it. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

And again, thank you all for the helpful responses.

David,

I'm going to make this easy for you

Here are two excerpt books. Both contain excerpts that would be great for your audition. Pick one and buy it.

Norris-TOP 50 ORCHESTRAL AUDITION EXCERPTS

CICHOWICZ-ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS FOR TRUMPET

The Norris has a helpful intro and paragraph or two explaining each excerpt. The Cichowicz book includes a piano accompaniment for each excerpt, which would be helpful if you have not had the opportunity to play these excerpts in an orchestra.

You can buy them through the website or call them. I've dealt with Portland Sheet Music before and they do a great job. Oh yeah, here's the Charlier. Order these as soon as you can. A month sounds like a long time, but it's not. Good luck.

-Jimi

Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

Al Hemer out of Buffalo, NY is also very good for sheet music. alhemer.com. You might also want to try Robert King. I believe that they own the rights to Charlier and the rest of the Alphonse-Leduc library. Don't be suprised by the price of the Charlier book. I believe that it is about$35.00

Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

There are also three CD's that you REALLY REALLY need.

1. "Orchestral Excerpts for Trumpet" by Phillip Smith - Summit records - DCD144 - this CD has plenty of the major excerpts on it.
Available from Amazon @

Amazon.com: Orchestral Excerpts For Trumpet: Music: Johann Sebastian Bach,Bela Bartok,Ludwig van Beethoven,Georges Bizet,Claude Debussy,George Gershwin,Gustav Mahler,Modest Mussorgsky,Maurice Ravel,Ottorino Respighi,Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov,Robert Sch

2. "The Etudes of Charlier and Bitsch" by David Baldwin - available thru the ITG web site (International Trumpet Guild) - This CD has the Charlier # 2 etude on it.

3. "Contest Solos for Young Trumpeters" by Phillip Smith - available thru ITG web site (International Trumpet Guild) - this CD has the Goedicke "Concert Etude" on it.

Here is the URL for the ITG. Unfortunately I see that they are not accepting any online orders at the moment but maybe you can order the CD's by phone

ITG Web Site - Compact Disks

You can also order some great excerpt books thru Hickman Publications at

Hickman Music Editions

Good Luck and if we can be of any further help - let us know.

Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

There are lots of excerpt books available from Dr. Hickman at;
Hickman Music Editions:

My experience is that they are in stock and ship very fast but I have only bought a couple of books there.

The harder I work, the luckier I get!

Go for it!

Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

Ah it's all coming along so well. Thank you all so much for the help...what was once so scary is so exciting lately. The college looking for the orchestral pieces has an audition on the 23rd of February and I am very well prepared.

A side note though, I was offered full ride and lead spot at another college, but I'm not sure if I want to go to a place where I'm already the best

Unfortunately the 23rd audition conflicts with my festival where I was supposed to perform Venice, but Troy University has a trumpet solo competition I might enter.

But yes, things are going so well, and a 4 year university is finally in reach!

I'll keep you all updated as the days get closer!

If the school has a solid program and a professor with some real-life playing experience it might not be too bad to be the best, to be the one groomed for success.

If you want to mess up your audition on the 23rd, however, now is the time to start. These will help you should you choose the path to meltdown and self-destruction:
  1. Change your emboucure. Now, today, and drastically.
  2. Change mouthpieces.
  3. Over-practice (not to be confused with overlearning) so your chops get zero recovery time.
  4. Convince yourself that winning the audition is a life-or-death situation--nothing beats anxiety for messing us up.
  5. Get loaded the night before so that you are dehydrated and feel miserable the day of the audition.
  6. Don't spend time vividly visualising yourself succeeding, rather explore the 1001 ways to crash and burn in detail and obsess over them.
  7. Practice being over-confident, even arrogant, and try proving to the committee that you can play higher, faster and louder than anyone else.
  8. Forget how much you love the trumpet (this works really well when combined with tip number 4).
  9. Tell yourself that being the best has nothing to do about being musical.
  10. Insult the committee, the school and the facilities. Be a prima-donna, not some humble "Mr. Nice Guy."
Whatever you do, if you wish to fail: don't have fun!

Re: Big Audition Coming Up!

David Hickman will take care of you. Good advice has been given.

Try ASU as in Arizona state University if things don't go your way. Hickman runs a great masters program and the experience of the FSU audition will help you get through the David Hickman audition. David Hickman is tough.
