All right, you guys have got me thinking now. Enlighten me. What are the reasons for having a pitch finder, other than the obvious concept from the title? Are these better/different than using valve slides? Aren't they a trigger type device?

The pitch finder is a tuning slide trigger. It's nice for pulling down some of those nasty open notes (great for the G's in Pines offstage). It's also nice for mutes and section playing. You should start another topic and see what people think of them...you'll get lots of different opinions.

Hi

Some days , I'd need a pitch finder with a hydraulic slenoid attached to Conn Strobotuner that automaiticlly finds it for me becasue it's no where in the orchestra, that's for sure. ( Of course, I'm never the probelm, I'm the principal )

Hey, that gizmo doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Get me , MacGyver on the phone.

Pitch finders dont sound like a bad idea sometimes. I'd love one for quick mute changes. I don't know about the rest, I've become used to playing certain pitches by ear, I wouldn't want to jeapordize that part, but for quick mute changes it could be very effective, thus not having to hear the sharp mute sound when you have to do 1 measure mute chanes.

Probably most of us can agree that anybody that uses a c trumpet in orchestra does so because they feel it is the right sound for the job. I sometimes get confused when I see an orchestral trumpet player play a Duke Ellington chart on their c trumpet. I cannot speak for Mr Ellington but I dont think he had the c trumpet in mind when he wrote a big band tune. Players in these big bands did not play c trumpet. Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count basie. I see trumpet players in orchestras play "In the Mood" on a c trumpet. Now it becomes a matter of what one feels more comfortable playing not the right sound for the right job.

Any thoughts on this.
I have played in a few orchestras that Duke conducted.
I played on a C trumpet and Duke love it, he even rearranged some sections of "Harlem" to be played by me.
I went through a period where I played everything on my C.
I subbed with Thad and Mel's band, I played many broadway shows, I played with the NY Philharmonic all on the same LB Bach.
If I didn't speak up, noone knew the difference.
Rarely was I asked about equipment.

I just thought I'd give you guys a tip off about the new C trumpet from Eclipse. It will be going into production in the next few weeks after several months of R&D. The final prototype is amazing - clear bright even tone and very powerful. Oh, and you won't be needing a pitch finder because there are no 'nasty' notes - same as the Eclipse B flat models.

Noel.
