Defining Trumpet Music

Hello All,

I was working on the Hindemith trumpet sonata the other day, specificaly the third movement. I have come to gretly appreciate the lyrical middle section of the third movement and was thinking that this has to rank as one of 'those' moments in trumpet literature. Yes, great music is great music when played well but there is some music that defines the trumpet either played by young or well seasoned players.

So I ask what section of music or a piece you would play when someone says 'play me something?'

Re: Defining Trumpet Music

I play the theme from "Hockey Night in Canada" for them. I know it is not a classical piece or even all that difficult but living in Canada it is a classic for us. After the first couple notes everyone thinks that it is the coolest thing ever, sometimes the simplest tunes give the gratest joy.

It depends who is asking. If it is a younger trumpet player, I generally ask them what they are playing and use that - no need to show off. If it is a more mature player, I figure out why they are asking. Many times you get asked to play something just so the person asking gets an opportunity to show off afterwards. If I think that they want to prove range, I will play something lyrical but not too high (2nd movment Hummel comes to mind).

If it is just an innocent request out of true interest, Stardust with a chorus or two generally gets a good response.

Re: Defining Trumpet Music

You all may have never heard of it, but Antares by Joseph Turrin is one of my favorites. It has a simple key signature but has a lot of added sharps and flats. There are some strange melodies, but it is fun to play, and people seem to like hearing it. Almost like they don't know where it's going next, so they want to keep listening.

Being primarily a Christian trumpeter and doing a good portion of my playing in churches, I get asked this quite often. If it is a young person asking, I usually play something very melodic, like 'Come thou fount of every blessings. If it is the church music director asking, I ask that person for a piece of music that they wish to hear. If it is some show off wannabee trumpet player, I do a fantasia on Rock of ages by John Scripps, or my own acrobatic version of Power in the blood. I also play in two community concert bands where such questions rarely come up, but, when they do, Arbans Carnival of Venice V. ll is my choice.

Re: Defining Trumpet Music

I always think of the Hummel and the Hyden TCs, Carnival of Venice, and Blue Bells of Scotland, w/ variations, from Arbans. Of those, the latter is the only one I can actually play... getting better at CoV though!

Speaking of playing, I performed for a group of about 30 4th & 5th graders today. The first piece was the little snippet of Mozart's "Magic Flute" out of Arbans, which received polite applause. The second piece was the "Chicken Dance," which brought the house down. The kids jumped up and were clapping and singing along. Not my idea of "trumpet music," but a definite crowd pleaser

As a group, our band finds that "Macarena" gives the kids a real buzz - makes the section concentrate on the timing and responds to the mood of the section too - if we've had a less than perfect performance this piece seems to give us a lift - don't ask me, I'm only the remedial 3rd chair.

Hey, I'll take advice from a "remedial 3rd chair," given how I don't even have a chair. Still trying to work up the chops and nerve to audition for 3rd trumpet opening in the local community symphony orchestra

Cool! I play in our small orchestra(about 10 of us) in chruch as well. All of those are great songs. I do find that Hymns have a lot of places were you can throw in ornamentations to give it that little extra.

I would love to be able to do a Dixie version of Amazing Grace - well, one day, that gives me a goal.
