How about applying to the Univ of Michigan's School of Music? prof Bill Campbell runs a great trumpet program, and on top of that, if you want to focus on academic aspects of music, they have very strong programs in things like Theory, Composition, Musicology, Music History etc.

Re: Dma

I would echo previous comments reccomending Boston University. I go there now and have found Terry Everson (the main guy there) an exceptional musician and player. I imagine he would be of excellent service in the DMA enviroment when the two of you would be free to concentrate mostly on music and less on technical production on the instrument. One of our guys just won a job in New Zealand (Auckland I think?) and another is a finalist for the Singapore Symphony so there are some very strong players coming through that you could learn from. If you are interested, feel free to PM me and I can answer any questions you might have.

Best,

Greg

"North Texas... Period"

S-Money, don't you think this is a little close minded? North Texas has a great program but it is not the only one out there.
There are a lot of schools with strong DMA programs, check them out, take lessons and mostly talk with the professor at the school. DMA is a very different story than any other degrees, you need to make sure you are on the same page as the professor as far as style, ideas, goals, teaching philosophy. Don't look at the school name, go for the teacher and what you expect to learn from him/her. Once it comes to get a job, the only thing that really matters is...can you play not where did you go to school.

Whoah whoah whoah, I was just giving my oppinion. Of COURSE all that matters. However, we were asked for a good DMA program, and I gave one, which I would consider to be top notch. Close minded... I think not. Also, I dont think that a DMA is that different from a Masters is that different from an Undergrad. In essence, yes, they're completely different. But from the information you spoke of (being on the same page as the professor with style, ideas, etc etc)... if you're that serious about going into higher education specializing in this, I think you should be looking at this from the get-go. Get a head start on all of that, dont just pick a good program in music education without being on those same levels as your teacher; you will get much more out of it that way. Learning as much as you can at every level is oh-so important.

Re: Dma

No worries. "the period" sounded like this was the only good one. Your opinion was and is good. North Texas is a great school.
I still believe that the dma will be different than the undergrad degree but this is my opinion.
Having done it, the course work, the teaching load, the dissertation, the expectations were for me far different than when I was an undergrad.

I have seen many young player choosing schools for their undergraduate degree more by the school name than for the teacher or their philosophy. Maybe they have heard good things about someone and believe this is the best bet but how many really take the step to go take lessons with all the teachers in their list? This would actually be a good research project.

Yeah, I agree... of course its going to be different, theres no question. There is a lot more work, and much more of the same concepts, just much much more in-depth. However, what I was referring to was what you said in your last post, which was how you interact with your private teacher, and how your views compare to theirs. In that aspect, I would think it silly to only regard that as important when it comes to a DMA. I was suggesting that it is of the utmost importance in an undergrad degree just as much as a DMA. Of course, in undergrad, most are still trying to define some of these things; but if they go with a teacher for what they already know or believe, they see their ideas put into action, and can really decide if it is what they think or not.
