Re: Do You Have to Sight Read?

There are lots of different screen-reading and text-to-speech programs. A popular one is called JAWS® for Windows® Overview.

As for typing, that's easy. Visually impaired people have been using typewriters and keyboards forever. Look closely at your keyboard and you will see a dot or raised ridge on the F and J keys. That's so visually impaired people can find "home row."

Computers have actually revolutionized things for visually impaired people. If I seem outspoken about this, it's because I was legally blind until I was in high school and was very involved with the Lions Club growing up.

I remember a blind person using a computer in a Robert Redford movie a decade ago, but I don't know how realistic that was.

I am hard of hearing, so rather than have the TV turned up to 150 decibels I tend to rely on Closed Captions.

It is obvious that many of the Closed Captions I see are created by voice-recognition software because no sane person sitting at a keyboard would type such bizarre nonsense things that bear no resemblance to what is actually being said.

Plus, I often hear a filthy word "bleeped" in the audio but it appears with correct spelling in the Closed Captions.
Then there are other times when the word is "bleeped" in the Closed Captions but I hear it in all its "glory" in the regular audio.

And when the "bleep" does happen I am often surprised at what they "bleep".
For example, I have lost track of the times that I have seen / heard "***damn" in shows and in movies.
Heaven forbid that the word "God" get through.

Then I am amazed at the number of movies on Cable TV and on DVD which have no Clased Captions at all.
Some of them even claim that they do but they don't.

Or a pet peeve is when local news does video within video so that they can do weather alerts or election results while continuing with regular programming.
They moment they do that, the Closed Captions of the regular programming disappear.

This is the end of my gripe session.
If this had been an actual emergency you would have been advised to call my doctor.
We now return you to regular programming...
