![]() | Re: Doc Severinsen's Final Big Band Tour I agree with stchasking - a concert in St Louis would be great! Close enough for me to attend. DL

Jim The Touhill hasn't returned a response so it's a good thing I can make the road trip to Decatur. I have told my boss I'll be late for work on Monday.

![]() | Doc on Larry King Live I've just received word that Doc will be appearing on Larry King Live this Friday, February 23rd. Apparently, never before seen footage from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson has been unearthed. Doc will be in-studio for this one, mid-tour between Carmel & Palm Desert. The show runs live at 9pm ET/6pm & 9pm PT. Have a great week! |

![]() | Re: Doc Severinsen's Final Big Band Tour Garry - I have not heard anything about it being rescheduled. I somehow doubt it as we did find out that the videos are not even of the Tonight Show. They were made in the 50s with Mr. Carson on a CBS broadcast prior to his start on the Tonight Show (so Doc actually had nothing to do with it). Will definitely post other Doc news as I receive it. Best, Bernadette |

![]() | Re: Doc Severinsen's Final Big Band Tour Mark and I got to see Doc's show in Cerritos yesterday. It was the first time in 12 yrs that I wasn't wearing a headset screaming lighting & spot cues. Getting to sit in the audience was a treat. As some of you know, my husband Mark was also Doc's sound man on several of these tours...so sitting next to the monitor board instead of working was pretty nice for him, too. Doc sounded great, looked great and was quite sentimental in his interaction with the audience. We have enjoyed every tour...every band...but this one was truly outstanding. We heard inner voices that we've never heard before on tunes we've heard hundreds of times. When I walked into Doc's dressing room at intermission, he said, "Well...what do you think?" I told him and he gave a big smile while nodding his head in agreement. There are 9 new people to the band and they are all outstanding in their own right. Of course, Tom DeLibero & Tony Scodwell were golden (playing lead & 2nd, respectively). Brandon Wright held his own with Ernie Watts as they dueled on "Sax Alley". Benji Daneman did a great job on tpt solo in "Jumpin' at the Woodside" - a solo that I'll always associate with Conte Candoli. Ernie was, as always, fantastic (especially on "Jumpin'...). Mark talked to him after the show and said, "Man...you sound great!" Ernie's reply was typical of this humble man "thanks...still learning to play this thing." You know - Ernie takes his book to his room every night so he can practice. 'Til this day. Ernie could probably play this book from memory! It tells you a little bit about his work ethic. The band jelled very quickly considering the new mix. Doc is pretty proud of this group. Jens Lindemann showed up after sound check (oops - guess he didn't get the word on time change) and stayed through and smoked stogies after dinner. Charlie Davis came over to the hotel after the show to say hi and hung out for a bit with Doc, Tony & Jens. Ed McMahon was in the audience and came back after the concert. Another sentimental moment for Doc especially when Doc said, "You know...one of us is missing now". It was a very special day for us...but bittersweet. Jens said it best when he said, "This one was hard" and put his hand to his heart. Yes...indeed. Get to one of his shows if you can...I don't think you'd regret it. _________________ One old statement comes to mind: "when done asking questions, try consistent, intelligent daily practice”. - Doc Severinsen Last edited by BinSB; 02-26-2007 at 07:39 PM. ![]() | Re: Doc Severinsen's Final Big Band Tour Hope y'all don't mind the influx of "Doc News". This article appeared in the Press Telegram/Long Beach prior to Doc's performance in Cerritos. I think it might give you some insight into where Doc is in his life. A coda for Doc Severinsen By Luanne J. Hunt, Special to the Press-Telegram Article Launched: 02/23/2007 12:00:00 AM PST DOC SEVERINSEN AND HIS BIG BAND LIVING HIGH in the mountains of central Mexico, former "Tonight Show" trumpeter and band leader Doc Severinsen is taking full advantage of his semi-retirement status. Severinsen, 79, who will appear Sunday with his big band at Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, said he can't get over how much he's enjoying the scenery and his free time. Since moving to San Miguel de Allende last year, Severinsen has been taking horseback riding Doc Severinsen lessons and exploring his new town. He said he is also doing a lot of soul searching and hopes to discover what the man behind the trumpet is really all about. "I'm going to be seeing if there are some things I can learn about myself," said Severinsen, who won a Grammy Award in 1987 for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance - Big Band for his recording of "Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band - Volume I." "I've been playing the trumpet all my life and I'm not sure who Doc Severinsen really is," he said. "I'm looking forward to finding out and I hope I like him." From his first appearance on "The Tonight Show" in 1962, Severinsen has been a crowd-pleaser. The Arlington, Okla., native began his late-night television career as first trumpeter in "The Tonight Show" band. In 1967, Severinsen took over as music director for the show. He remained in that position until 1992 when its host, the late Johnny Carson, retired. Prior to joining "The Tonight Show," Severinsen served in the Army during World War II. When his duty ended, Severinsen toured with several orchestras, including the Charlie Bennett band, the Tommy Dorsey band and the Benny Goodman band. In 1949, he became a staff musician for NBC. Severinsen's association with the television network eventually landed him his job on "The Tonight Show." He said those were the best years of his life and leaving the show was very difficult. "I don't think I really ever let go of 'The Tonight Show' until Johnny died," said Severinsen. "That was the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence. But after I heard the news, he had passed away, I sat outside my home and heard Johnny's voice saying to me that death happens sooner than we think. "He told me to get off the merry-go-round, and nothing has been the same for me as far as what I want out of life." At the time, Severinsen said he knew he wasn't ready to fully retire. So he divided his energies between cultivating his personal life and a manageable touring schedule. He took some of "The Tonight's Show's" best musicians on the road, playing to audiences around the country. Appearing under the name "Doc Severinsen and His Big Band," the group put together a repertoire of songs from the big band era, as well as pop, blues and jazz tunes. Severinsen said audiences were finally able to hear the depth of talent belonging to a band that rarely played a whole tune on the air. Over the years, "Doc Severinsen and His Big Band" have continued to perform music that is familiar to the public. Severinsen admits there won't be many surprises in the Cerritos concert. "We try not to make a mystery out of the music, leaving the audience wondering what it is that we're doing," said Severinsen, who has released more than 30 recordings. "The music is very identifiable and pretty straightforward big band stuff. What works for us is great lighting and sound and also having great featured vocalists." Along with Severinsen's 16-piece orchestra, Carmen Bradford will appear as a guest vocalist in the Cerritos show. Bradford, a native of Altadena, toured with the Count Basie band for nine years in the 1980s. She also has performed with James Brown, Lou Rawls, Willie Nelson, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Wilson and Herbie Hancock Severinsen said he will officially retire in early June. He said he loves performing but is counting the days to the life of leisure he's been dreaming about for quite some time. "Johnny gave me the opportunity to put together one of the greatest big bands of all time," Severinsen said. "I will miss performing, but I think it's time to do something different with my life. "I'm going to ride horses, build a house and do anything else I feel like doing. My wife and I have made some interesting changes over the last year that keeps the good stuff coming." |
