Lew Soloff is playing a Schilke 4 valved trumpet that can be seen in the opening shots of this video. Vince Penzarella used to borrow the horn to use in the NY Philharmonic.

Re: F trumpet question

It's 4 valved,but is a Bb horn?
Any details?because I only know of a 4 valve Bb flat trumpet that has rotrary valves, not of piston vlves.
Any idea about the model, number? The sound of the isntruments seems quite nice to me.

Re: F trumpet question

The horn is a one of a kind made for Lew Soloff trumpet. Lew was, at the time the lead trumpet player with one of the world's top groups. The instrument is a fine horn, as is most of the Schilke Bb trumpets I have played.

Re: F trumpet question

Wilmer -
Is that horn similar to the one Don Ellis and his section used back in the 60s? My understanding was that the fourth valve was for producing quarter tones...is that the same deal as this one?

Thanks,

Re: F trumpet question

If it was a quater-tone trumpet, tha I do not think it's one of a kind.
Marcinkiewicz sells quatertone trumpets and flugels:

Re: F trumpet question

Think of it like a Bb piccolo trumpet one octave lower. It was not designed to play quarter-tones.
