Re: F trumpet question

Joe Marcinkiewicz has a four-valve Bb in his showroom (4th valve down a fourth). He has the valve sections for such a project, from his quarter-tone trumpets. However, I don't know if he'd consider making another one -- they're certainly not in the catalog.

Re: F trumpet question

That 4 valve Schilke is in their showroom and, yes, you can play it.
I was too chicken to do so, but I did hold it. It is well balanced for a slightly heavy trumpet. Darn, but I really should have played a few notes on it.

"Why Strauss, Mahler and other composers have written their F (and E, Eb, etc.) trumpet parts well below the normal written trumpet range of F#."

Alcohol.
Nope,
they composed for it because it was there. It was the favoured instrument of at least one complete generation of german pro players. I am sure once the pro is used to it, the security is there.
Modern instruments were created because of alcohol. Compared to the old instruments it is easier to hit the notes (or harder to miss) even when you are drunk.
I tried a Mahler 8 rehearsal on my F trumpet, a humbling experience. I guess I need to practice more.
