Telemann Concerto in D for Corno da Caccia works fantastically well on Flugel. Its normally sold as a french horn piece.
Crispian Steele-Perkins did a recording of it years ago and it inspired me to perform it in the early 90's.

Definitley worth looking out.

Gorgeous piece.
This is on Phil Smith's New York Legends CD, which if you don't have, you should!

It only goes from low G (watch the tuning down there on the flugel) up to a B - nothing technically hard. It's basically a series of really nice melodies, and cadenzas.

Check it out:

That's the 1st mvt, without piano part. Get the whole thing from BIM.

Thanks, Jack! This piece sounds gorgeous, even on my old Bach!

I am pretty sure I'll use this piece for one of my upcoming recitals.

Now to get a flugelhorn rounded up for it..

I hate to be the one to disagree with you, Manny, but

crotchet - 1/4 note
minim - 1/2 note
semibreve - whole note
breve - double note? (if counting crotchets, a breve would have 8 beats)

Flugelhorn Pieces

A couple of ideas that haven't been mentioned:
The second movement (Aria) from the Flor Peeters Sonata for Trumpet. I use it for church services all the time, and for a lyrical interlude in a short recital.

Folksong by Bruce Broughton
I know, I know, it's written for trumpet. Tell Phil Smith; he did this at an ITG convention a few years ago and used flugel for the beginning and the end, with trumpet in the middle. A very effective little piece.

Another vote for Nightsongs. If you ever get a chance to play it with strings and harp (the original instrumentation) jump on it.

Not a problem - I doubt you often have the need to be bilingual

Rex Richardson (US Yamaha Artist, amazing player, jazzman extraordinaire and all-round nice guy) is over here doing a couple of masterclasses at the moment and he asked me to remind him of our "strange ways" over a curry last night
You are not alone - I have to think when saying 1/2 note, 1/4 note etc, but I guess I spend enough time online to understand you guys

Thanks Jack....I only wish that all music could be published as clearly as this piece. I believe music publishers are not aware that quite a number of players continue playing past the 60 year old bracket. ....
