the best thing to do, is find an un-edited part. i know there are versions on the haydn online like this. then put your own markings in in. listen to all the great recordings, and compare them to the other printed versions, and do what you like. of course you should consult with your teacher about this.

At the time Voisin and Ghitalla did not like each other very much.

By all means you should check out the new editions of the Haydn, Hummel and others by David Hickman. Both have lots of historical information regarding articulations and ornaments. The Haydn has several views of the original score with some surprises. Including the sforzandos in the 2nd movement of the Haydn. That was ne w to me! Mr. Hickman has done a super job.

Here's a list of Haydn and Hummel from a small project I worked on a while back. It is by no means complete, but it should give you a starting point. CDs are listed by artist, title, and record label (if I could find it).

Hummel

Hakan Hardenberger, Famous Classical Trumpet Concertos;
Maurice Andre, The Ultimate Trumpet Collection, Elektra;

Sergei Nakariakov, Trumpet Concertos, Elektra;

George Vosburgh, Four Trumpet Concerti, Four Winds;
John Wallace, T for Trumpeter, Wallace Collection;
Charles Schlueter, Trumpet Concertos, Kleos;
Hakan Hardenberger, Trumpet Concertos: Haydn, Hertel, Stamitz, Polygram;
Timofei Dokshitzer, Trumpet Rhapsody, RCA;
Maurice Andre, Trumpet Concertos: Vivaldi/Telemann/L. Mozart/Hummel, Angel Records;
Ole Edvard Antonsen, Trumpet Concertos, EMI

Haydn
Wynton Marsalis, Classic Wynton, Sony;
Hakan Hardenberger, Famous Classical Trumpet Concertos;
Maurice Andre, Trumpet Concertos, EMI;
Maurice Andre, The Ultimate Trumpet Collection, Elektra;

And yes, the Al Hirt Haydn with the Boston Pops/Arthur Fiedler is a scream! I have it on LP.

Wynton has recorded both of these concertos twice. His debut classical album Trumpet Concertos has the Hummel in Eb and his album The London Concert has it in E. I recommend you listen to both, not only because his playing is flawless, but because it gives you an example of how the same player can approach these pieces in different ways.

Haydn

Crispian Steele Perkins on keyed trumpet (Hyperion label) and Maurice Andre

Hummel (in E)
Gerard Schwartz (don't know if this is still available! I have it on that ancient format - cassette!)

Hummel (in Eb)
Wynton Marsalis or Maurice Andre

Hummel/Haydn

I have probably 30 different recordings of these standard literature concertos. Some are very well done and other not so much.

When my private students work on these I have a CD where I dubbed the particular movement needed by about 20 different players. The reason is to expose them to a variety of approaches in the performance.
The are IMO some pretty poor examples but I feel my students can learn from that also. The ornamentations vary from different players so this is something to consider when making the piece "your own"
