Ha! He's performing Strauss 2nd coming up very soon, actually!

The MO admin like to hear from the players about repertoire to be performed and we have a music director who is also very willing to listen regarding that sort of thing. I'll suggest it to Mike Gast (our first horn). You'll hear him when we do Mahler 5 in August. The guy's a bear!

Hindemith

Hi Manny,
Looking through my music I found the score (for concert band) the Symphony in Bb printed in Germany by B. Schott's Mainz Germany 1951.
Four Cornets, and two trumpets. Don't know if this will help.
John
P.S. two oboes, can't forget my oboes!

Since this is morphing into a discussion of Hindemith's brass pieces, overlooked works include the alt horn Sonate (better than the horn Sonate, in my opinion), the Symphony in Bb mentioned above, and the Konzertmusik for Brass, 2 harps, and solo piano.

The horn Concerto isn't high on my list of must-hears, but I rather like the Concerto for trumpet & bassoon.

Cheers,
EC

The Konzertmusic for Brass and Strings is a favorite of mine. I especially love the DVD of Hindemith and the CSO performing it (c. 1966), though recorded versions have cleaner string playing.

Also, Morgenmusik is a good one.

Yes, Hindemith wrote a Sonata for Four Horns. It's been recorded by, among others, the Summit Brass on their Hindemith Complete Brass Works disc.

By the way, Dennis Brain conducted the Hindemith Horn Concerto with Hindemith himself conducting. It's available on EMI, coupled with the two horn concerti by Richard Strauss.

That's a very funny picture when you think about it.

Oops, I assume it's obvious what I meant to write. It is a very famous recording though, and well worth the money ...;)

there is also a concerto for orchestra if I'm not mistaken, also the "pittsburgh symphony" is very cool.
here's a list of works:
