Wasn't it Stravinski that said "bad composers borrow, great composers steal"?

Actually, it was "Good composers borrow, great composers steal." This was of course tongue-in-check.

Also, one thing about John Williams is that he willingly acknowledges his "influences." He especially credits Mahler and Stravinsky.

I think this is the issue. Why is it so hard to credit the original? Why is it so hard to accept intellectual property? How many of us have only photocopies of publications that we use regularly? If we like the stuff, why not support the people creating it? I remember an awful lot of photocopied material when I was in highschool, I wonder if that was authorized by the publisher and if we are teaching kids a fuzzy sense of ownership...........(this is not a hit on teachers, I know how hard it is to get budget - still - check out www.charactercounts.org)
The music industry has taken a real hit - illegal digital CD copies are supposedly the reason. If I like the music but the CD costs $40, I don't support that. I don't need a "free copy" then either. If we reward the people doing the right things (with money), the marketing people wake up.
If Zimmer likes Mars, cool, give the Holst Foundation their cut and everybody is happy. Maybe people will even go out and buy some Planets CDs after seeing the film - incentive for the foundation not to "milk" the composer/arranger. As long as theft is not labled as such, everybody goes into protect mode and the lawyers get rich - they didn't even have anything to do with the creative process in the first place!
