Re: Most important

Your original question read:
What is the most important thing needed to play the trumpet?
My simple answer is:
1-Desire
2-The ability to take a good breath and maintain a simple buzz.

Not every individual who will purchase an instrument and take up studies will become a virtouso. Does this mean that they should never pursue their interest in the trumpet-NO.
The lessons learned from establishing goals and pursuing them, and team play can have many positive affects on an individual.

Music is a Joyful GIFT.......and let's not forget what Maynard used to call the trumpet- "God's Instrument"

Maintain a mindset of Joy.

Re: Most important

Man, folks, I'm with Manny on this one. When it comes to excelling, some folks can work harder than anyone else and only go so far. This is intuitive - we all know it to be true. It's true in a lot of areas of life. We also know that there are those folks that are "overachievers" but they'll never get as far as one who is gifted in music and also passionately pursues excellence in music/trumpet playing. Some of us who love the horn and work hard become pretty good but we don't have the "talent" to go clear to the top. You may disagree - but I'll never agree with thoughts to the contrary (call me stubborn). That doesn't mean I don't have great admiration for the "overachievers" of the world. I also don't mean to discourage them. But....if we're discussing what it takes to just "play" the trumpet - then lots of heart, some basic physical skills, lots of hard work and some equipment is it. But....to really be a "player" at the upper levels of the profession, you must work extremely hard - and have "talent" (and a trumpet to play helps!).

I am pretty sure Maynard had his front teeth in a bridge and Rafael Mendez had his front teeth knocked about.

I performed with an excellent trumpet player who knocked out his front teeth running at night and hit a flag pole. He still played great.

Re: Most important

That reminded me of this quote a clinician gave me at district jazz band. He said "Music is not a talent, practicing is."
