Agree with you Robin. I think unions in general have their heads in their asses. That in the process of maximum income for their workers for minimal work they eliminate the employment that otherwise would have been there. I think a lot of unions are adopting Don Feher's (baseball union) model. "Give us everything we are demanding and more, anything less is failure for me and failure for me is unacceptable" rather then getting a deal that we all can live with.

The SPCO is in the black and one of the things that contributed to it is LOWERING ticket prices. My seats are $10, for local comparison the MN Orchestra lowest ticket is twice as much and even more. They are consistantly playing to full houses. I wonder why more orchestras don't try that. Having said that no music director saves them 1,000,000+ a year and the SPCO center saves them about the same. (they dont have to run all over the metro area to rehearse) So it can be done but it takes management and players working together rather then having the against each other.

The utopian dream of any labor union is simply to have "fair wages and working conditions." What "fair" actually looks like is subject to negotiation. The following link shows the old contract, clicking on "home" will provide more information on ICSOM. Jacksonville Symphony

Labor negotiations in real life have little to do with economics and much more with power and politics. Sorry.

Re: The Music has stopped - Jacksonville Symphony

I guess what it comes down to is Jacksonville is a city that doesn't care much about the arts. You combine that with poor management and this is what you get.

A fair wage means that you get paid about the same as others doing the same job in about the same location.

I think all musicians in order to get their degree should have to take a business course. I agree 100% with Robin.

Comparing sports to the symphony is way out there. When the symphony can fill the stadium every Sunday and have TV follow them around they can pay millions. The majority of the US population doesn't want to go to a symphony concert.
