Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

A bit back on topic...

I have been taught and brought up to treat the Charlier book as sort of an orchestral trumpet method book, in that if you can get through each of the etudes in C, on C (except for the Wagner etude, where the excerpts are obviously written in Bb), then you will be ready for just about anything in the big-time orchestral world (yes, there are exceptions, but it's reasonably close). In my opinion, it makes perfect sense for the NYP to require the Charlier etude with the given stipulations.

And by the way, if you've never played through the book in C, on C, be thankful they only asked for #2.

If there's any discrepancy on how Stravinsky wanted things played, hopefully that would be settled when he conducts his own music. There's a cheaper album (maybe $11) with L'histoire du soldat, the Octet, and Symphonies of Wind Instruments which is also really great. The album info says it's Brady playing the trumpet part, but the picture seems to be Nagel. Anyone know what the case is with that??

I don't think even this could be called the "definitive" Stravinski interpretations, as he was known to change and revise things many many times throughout his life. even such things as tempos have varied wildly. all this shows is that he is indeed human like the rest of us. I think a variety of interpretations of pretty much every piece ever written is acceptable. its good to be flexible.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I just wanted to let you all know that I will be taking this audition. And I am practicing my excerpts, RECORDING myself. Watch out, this is going to be stiff competition. But one question. How fast does Charlier #2 go? I usually only practice excerpts in my daily routine, so maybe you guys can give me insight!!

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

If your going to audition you are ahead of me, but I'll speak up at the risk of getting put in my place again.

I would play it really fast so the quick tempo matches the higher pitch with the C trumpet.

I'm kidding but, I would play it a little faster rather then too slowly.
It's your call. It has a marking of 84. but I think in general people tend to drag it out.

Thanks for the advice!! I will try my best to make a good audition tape. I am going to do my recording in my bathroom because then I'll get lots of reverb and my teacher told me that makes your tone better. I want to impress Phil Smith! Have any of you met him in person?

Wow, you must have a big bathroom, to be able to put your mic six feet in front of you and eight feet from the ground! :)
