Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

It struck me that the list is an extremely fair and well thought out one.

I was accepted for an audition for Radio France Phil, but had to resign myself when I saw the excerpt list. It was so difficult and long! I felt and I knew that I was not prepared (I had no pro experience at all at the time) for that. I don't actually know what of the 2 approaches is best. Well, the position I am talking about was Principal and not 3rd. Then, few years later I send my CV for an audition for the principal of Ulster (if I remember well) and there I was refused because of unsifficient pr experience. I believe that every orchestra has his own policy and strategies for getting the players they want, and I am not sure that they have to explain those to everyone. That's just the way it is

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I know it is different in other places, but the reason NY Phil listens to everyone is that they don't want to miss out on anyone. I was the perfect example, because just 2 months before NY Phil, I sent in my resume to a pretty major orchestra. I was not granted an audition, even after I submitted a tape. At my time of auditioning, my resume didn't have anything very impressive, so I am fortunate that they allowed me the chance to be heard. Good luck to everyone!

Bravo to the NYP for that. Orchestras like Toledo should take note. Especially when they tell some applicants they don't have enough experience but let local students in.

Hey rubberduckie,

What is the most important thing you have learned the first year on the job.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I have to say to listen. You can be playing perfectly, great tone, right with the conductor, and be absolutely wrong. In the words of one of my colleagues, "You aren't here to play with Maestro ********, you are here to play with the New York Philharmonic."

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

Gee, I wonder which principal horn player said that.

p.s. He's right. Most of what you learned in school about following the conductor goes right out the window on the job.

I don't want to hijack a thread but I want more info.

What do you do when you play principal and the conductor has a different idea than what is going on?
