Lgelfuso will become famous soon enough
Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

Just play in on your C as if written for "C". You'll find they picked that for a reason. It's difficult to keep the etude in tune on C...

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I'm surprised that no one has offered the possible explanation that Charlier is a french etude book...and don't they use the C trumpet almost exclusively in France now? Makes perfect sense to me...

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

If it seems strange for you that the NYP wants the Charlier etude on the C than maybe you just might want to sit this one out.

Josh MacCluer is the St. Louis Symphony's Second Trumpet Player. He is an experienced pro.

I don't think he is being mean so much as practical. There are tons of stories about great players telling the bandleader or conductor "Sure!" and then doing it, despite the stupidity or difficulty of the request. Willingness is a hallmark of musicianship.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

If New York wants a C trumpet, they are offering the job and can require ANYTHING.
If we play the game by their rules, we have a chance of winning, if not we have no chance of even getting started.
Maybe the C trumpet requirement is the way that they keep Bb playing English people out.............................

This is so true....

I can't even begin to imagine how many folks on this and many, many other blogs, forums etc. have taken a mere word or two and turned it into something negative.

But there is as much if not more responsibility on the writer than the reader. In as much as we should not jump to conclussions by how we perceive a statement, the writer needs to STOP and consider how what is being said may be taken.

Josh owns those words. It's up to him to clarify or not.
