In Praise of Mr. Glantz

HG NBC 1949.zip
Three guys part 2.mpg

Harry Glantz b 1896 d 1982
Principal
Philly 1915
NY Phil 1923-42
NBC 1942-54 on personnel invitation from Toscanini

His sound as an orchestral trumpet player has been skewed through the
years by well meaning but incompetent mastering engineers employed by
RCA and BMG. Here are two mpgs from the Testament DVD of the 1949
telecast of Aida. 16.7 mb total. This sounds amazing on my TV and
good on my stereo hooked up to my computer. RCA recorded Toscanini
well. The mastering engineers with an amazing display of talent, have
figured out new and different ways to strip Toscanini's recordings of
all Musical nuances. You should hear the CDS. In 1955, RCA released
Pictures at an Exhibition(recorded in 1953) in "New Orthophonic
Sound". Every critic except B.H. Haggin raved about the sound. Haggin
said that the treble boost made the opening trumpet piercing and the
Catacombs distorted. Haggin regularly attended NBC rehearsals and
concerts. The others did not

Here is what you need to know
Venue Studio 8-H
Second Trumpet Frank Falcone
Principal Bone Neil DiBiase
Second Bone Abe Pearlstein
Bass Bone John Clark
Tuba Abe Torchinsky
Tenor Richard Tucker
Conductor Toscanini
Orchestra The NBC Symphony

Enjoy

Re: In Praise of Mr. Glantz

Abbedd,

Vince Cichowicz used to cite Harry Glantz' recording of Heldenleben (1st Bb part) as the finest example of orchestral trumpet playing ever. . . and he sat next to a pretty decent player himself.

Best,
EC

The 1928 Mengelberg?

Rumor has it that this is the only time Glantz used a C trumpet

Re: In Praise of Mr. Glantz

Between 1948 and 1952 there were ten one hour concerts broadcasts of Toscanini and NBC. Most of the camera work is terrible as there was no one to copy from. One broadcast shows Toscanini from the waist up for the whole hour. They also missed many solos. The trombone chorale in the finale of Brahms First shows the third and fourth horn players emptying their slides

The best part of the DVDs from Testament is their sound. The NBC reference acetates and tapes were synced to the films. RCA/BMG did not have a chance to touch the audio so we all benefit.

You can get them from Blockbuster if you join. I got all 5 DVDS in my two week trial.

I will post the truimphal march from Aida. Not much Glantz, but maybe you can tell me who the hired trumpet players were

I once upon a time owned a Conn C trumpet that was supposed to have been Harry's horn. I was told that he used the horn on "Feste Romane"
Who knows? He was one of the all time greats. His "Quiet City" recording is remarkable.

Re: In Praise of Mr. Glantz

One of my early teachers was a huge Glantz fan. He told me that Harry requested that his recording of the Gershwin Piano Concerto be played at his funeral, as it was his favorite recording that he made. True?
