Re: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1

Great work ML. LOL.

My "must have" recording of this work is James Thompson w/Montreal. Shostakovich's son and grandson conduct and play the piano part.

Amazon.com: Shostakovich: Concerto No. 1, Op. 35: Music: Dmitry Shostakovich,Maxim Shostakovich,Yuli Turovsky,I Musici de Montréal,Dmitri Shostakovich [pianist],Dmitry Shostakovich,James Thompson

After advice on this board, I use the Trumcor brass bottom straight mute on the second movement.

I also studied this work with Leon Rapier and then again with James Thompson. It is one of my favorites to play.

I also love that Montreal recording, but another good couple are:

Leif Ove Andsnes/Hakan Hardenberger/City of Birmingham - Paavo Jarvi (EMI)

Mikhail Rudy/Ole Edvard Antonsen/Berlin Phil. - Mariss Jansons (EMI)

Yefim Bronfman/Thomas Stevens/LA Phil - Salonen (Sony)

All are worth checking out. My personal favorite of those three is probably the Antonsen with Berlin.

I would have mentioned the Vacchiano recording with Previn but, unbelievably, it's out of print! Gorgeous slow movement... my favorite.

Glenn... excellent!

Great list Robert! I will have to check them out too! Thanks.

Re: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1

The two that I have are Stevens/Bronfman/Salonen/LA Phil and Masseurs/Brautigam/Chailly/Concertgebouw.

The Stevens/Bronfman recording is the one I probably listen to the most...

I think it's funny that none of us has submitted for approval a Russian trumpeter/pianist combo playing this piece!

I was fortunate to hear Dokshitzer play this at the ITG in Rotterdam several years ago. I don't know if he recorded later. What a night BTW, he and Andre on the same concert!

I think it is more a matter of exposure, due to lack of availability of recordings, than lack of interest for this combo. I would personally like to hear more Russian interpretations of this work. I lean toward the Montreal recording because it has two out of three being directly related to Shostakovich. The trumpet player however, is certainly not Russian.

RG! LUCKY LUCKY YOU!

I heard Jim do this at the 1989 ITG conference in Santa Barbara...

Incredible!

Remember Clint Eastwood in "Firefox"? The plane would respond to his thoughts but only if he thought in Russian...

Maybe I'll just try that trick next time I have to play Shostakovich - though I've forgotten what little Russian I studied in college
