![]() | Re: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 Yeah, JJ, I forgot to mention that one, thanks. It's fun to listen to. I can't imagine Shostakovitch ever got to hear it, though. What I love about that arrangement is how small the middle movement solo becomes so small compared to the work that has to be done to prepare the rest of it. That's a good thing. ![]() | Re: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 A few years ago while preparing to perform this piece I went nuts and bought most of the recordings I could find. I think I have about a dozen, maybe 15. If you want to get as close to the source as possible, there are a number of recordings of Shosty playing this piece. I have two; one with the Moscow Philharmonic conducted by Samuel Samosud in 1956 with trumpet soloist Josif Volovnik, interesting from a historical point of view. However, the other one, recorded in Paris in 1958 with the French National Radio Orchestra conducted by Andre Cluytens, is truly fantastic and features Ludovic Vaillant on solo trumpet. WOW! Such excitement and elegance from a bygone era. In terms of the trumpet playing that's my favorite recording of the piece along with Gary Bordner's recording with the SPCO. JU |
