I have been honestly contemplating it Trent. What do you think Ed? Do you want someone like me around?

In all seriousness, I have wanted to check it out. I love the concept and just the overall vibe.

Weird. josefmonke.de has "Neusilberkranz am Schallstück" as an option, and all my friends around Stuttgart were playing without the kranz. (Sorry about the misspelling - the Swabian "k"s and "g"s sound an awful lot alike!) Isn't the whole kranz thing more Heckel than Schmidt? I am now confused, and it is all Alex's fault!

Sowwy Vulgano. If it's any consolation, I am confused now too! Perhaps these older models were made with the Kranz automatically before they made it an option?

Let's get confuseder: I have a Shediwy trumpet from back in the days Shediwy was working for the King in Ludwigsburg (pre-1918), with no kranz, so it appears not to be an old/new issue. Tarr has Schmidt and Heckel as the two early valved trumpet makers in Germany: Heckel followed by Ganter (which have a Kranz) and Schmidt followed by Monke. Anyway, kranz or not, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Try playing the Hindemith on it -- it becomes a whole other piece. And a question -- is the g above the staff a tad bit high?

Re: Silver Monke Bflat

Hi Alex!
The rotary valved sound is hard to describe to someone that has never played one. The low, middle and high registers have different "sounds". The sound also develops differently when playing a crescendo - holding together better up to the loudest FFFF. The crown on the bell keeps the energy coming out of the front of the horn. It is a different playing experience.
It may be interesting to note that there used to be 4 basic types of rotary trumpets: the Cologne (Monke), North German (Thein), Leipzig (Heckel) and Vienna (Lechner) models. They each had a different type of sound.

I suspect your horn is a little older. The newer models have a very large bell with a different flair.

For info on your horn send an E'mail to or call:

Re: Silver Monke Bflat

Hey, that's a beauty.
I have an old Heckel, and a Lechner that I'm using tonight on Beethoven 7. The Heckel has a kranz, the Lechner does not. Try it in your orchestra - I think they blend better with the strings, and besides they look cool....Enjoy!

Alex, welcome to the Rotary Club!

Alex, it looks like a very nice instrument to me...makes me jealous
Guys I was wondering....if they have been so good in the seventies, would be no a good idea for an instrument maker to makes copies of them? Leighs is offering some finishes which are supposed to give a horn a "vintage" look....Why not building such horns?

Re: Silver Monke Bflat

Nick, there are copies of the older instruments still being built. They do not sell well because another type of sound is preferred today and the level of tolerance in the various brass sections is not that great.
A true vintage instrument with a story or fond memory behind it, makes playing it even more special and you MAKE opportunities to use it. A modern copy is an expensive instrument that you probably won't be able to perform much with.
