Re: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

it is a very tough piece and I don't think it is fair to program that on a high school concert. IMHO

We played the Ravel Piano Concerto when I was in H.S., don't underestimate kids abilities.

Re: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Thank you for all of your responses. I have heard a few recordings and I really understand the sound that I am looking to have. Sadly, I am not much of a jazz/commercial style player and it is quite a change for me. I am going to do my best to play the whole thing on C, that seems the most manageable for me but I might be able to get my hands on a XL bore bach D trumpet which I might try. I am going to continue listening and hopefully the style will come with repetition. Its just not very inviting when notes are written so far above the staff that they require "* if impossible, tacet". I am going to do my darndest to tackle this part and hopefully I will be able to handle the whole thing on C.

Re: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

I went back to my recording of the "Symphonic Dances" to refresh my memory of the pacing of the work........ the studio recordings swung more than the original cast album
There is so much more in WSS than high notes. There are quiet moments that require the utmost finesse. The challenge is to wear all the hats well.

You can do it!

Re: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Unless you are really, really secure switching horns leave the D trumpet in the case. The D part appears only in "Cool" and the lick in the Mambo.
You can do it on your Bb...........Go for it!
