Re: "Trumpet Day(s)" at the LA Phil

The "Powers That Be" were behind the programming. Believe me, my wife wasn't very diplomatic about it either, as she had to listen to me practice the program during our Christmas vacation. Well, except the days she took the kids skiing while I stayed back and practiced...

I thought the two trumpet works and the Ives were the strongest of last night's program. Last week, we did a couple of pieces that were also difficult, but I thought they were better and had wider appeal - Zappa's "Dupree's Paradise", Crumb's "Haunted Landscape" and Varese' "Ameriques". Today we start rehearsing Boulez's "explosante-fixe" which is an absolute monster of a piece. Tuesday is Messiaen's "Des canyons aux étoiles". The fun never stops...

Was A. B. using a C and then a Eb? I thought I would never see a bucket mute used at a philharmonic event! She was very impressive (especially from 15 feet away) She has CHOPS!

Re: "Trumpet Day(s)" at the LA Phil

I believe that is correct - it was either a D or an Eb, probably an Eb. Yes, she can play! She's very sweet, too. And the British accent... sigh....

Re: "Trumpet Day(s)" at the LA Phil

Jim,

Fun concert -- Gabri was spectacular, as usual -- and even better hang (Jens, Gabri, Alison, you guys) afterwards. Bob Malone, Wayne, and Tom Dambly will join us tonight as well and Stevens is coming up to CalArts tomorrow for the class that Gabri and I are giving on the Sequenza. LA is Trumpet City these days...

See you again soon,
EC

tata,

We don't know each other but trust me . . . she looks WAY better in person. I'm sure that Mr. Clean will back me on this.

Here's a review of the concert: Sign Up
