Trumpet and Soprano works

Not really sure of the literature out there for voice and trumpet and would like to do something with a soprano later on in the fall. Any recommendations?

Re: Trumpet and Soprano works

Let the Bright Seraphim by Handel from Samson
fairly easy trumpet party (on piccolo) and well
the soprano has to practice. There's a lot of other stuff too, I just don't remember... but i'm sure someone else does

Check out this CD:

Scarlatti/Melani Arias with Judith Nelson and Dennis Ferry

Harmonia Mundi HMC 905137

Bach Cantata BWV51 with Michael Laird and Emma Kirkby is also awesome! Wynton Marsalis also played this with Kathleen Battle.

Ditto rowuk!

There are killer reductions from Handel and Bach, but they will not endear you to the organist.

Good luck!

Re: Trumpet and Soprano works

What kind of soprano? Lyric or coloratura can do the Baroque stuff pretty easily, but not so easy for a dramatic.

For Baroque stuff beyond Handel and Scarlatti:
Bach Cantata 51
G.B. Bassani Aria con Tromba "Quel che dice il tuo bel core"
Telemann "Göttlichs Kind, Lass mit Entzücken"
Zelenka - Laudate Pueri (originally for tenor, but works with soprano also)

Beyond the Baroque:
Eric Ewazen - To cast a shadow again....
Stanley Friedman - She Walks in Beauty
Bernhard Krol - Gloria breve (w/organ)
Robert Starer - The Mystic Trumpeter - (for Mezzo or dramatic soprano)
Peter Tiefenbach - Three Poems
Friedrich Wildgans - Der mystiche Trompeter, op. 52

There are lots of other contemporary pieces for chamber group (Schoenberg Nachtwandler, Webern, etc.).

I've done a couple of commissions as well, but those are multi-movement works that are a bear to put together. If you're interested, let me know.....

"Walk Slowly"
by Jim Stephenson.

Bill Campbell, trumpet professor at U of M, just did a version of this for tpt/soprano at U of M (Michigan). It works beautifully.

Contact me SalandJim@comcast.net for more info, or find him (google U of M faculty) and ask him about it.

Re: Trumpet and Soprano works

Check out the Gerard Schwartz/Judith Blegen recordings of the Handel arias...far superior to the Marsalis/Battle recordings. Marsalis' trumpet playing is incredible, but his interpretations of these works are far from authentic/appropriate.

Also...
Bach - Cantata 51 (several arrangements available)
Burgon - Nunc Dimittis
Cooper (arr) - Festive Arias for Soprano and Trumpet (the arias include: Alleluja from "Exsultate, Jubilate" and Laudamus Te from the "Mass In C minor" by Mozart; Let The Bright Seraphim from "Samson" by Handel; O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion and Rejoice Greatly from "Messiah" by Handel. The Alleluia and Let The Bright Seraphim are in two keys in order to make them available for both sopranos and mezzo sopranos)
Cooper (arr) - Festive Arias for Soprano and Trumpet Vol. 2 (Et Exultavit spiritus meus (Mozart); Quia Respexit (Bach); Esurientes implevit bonis (Bach); I Know That My Redeemer Liveth (Handel); Qui sedes ad dexteram (Vivaldi); Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach); Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Bach).
Chkolnik - Voici Noel
Friedman - She Walks In Beauty
Melani - All'armi, Pensieri
Melani - Quai Bellici Accenti
Melani - Quai Mormorio Giocondo
Plog - 2 Scenes
Purcell - Trumpet Song, from Massaniello
Reed - Prologue & Epilogue
Rizzetto - 5 Poems of Emily Dickenson
Rosenmuller - O Felicissimus Paradysi Aspectus
Scarlatti - Arias (7) con Tromba Sola
Serebrier - Erotica
Ustvolskaya - Symphony No 4 (for contralto voice, trumpet, piano & tam-tam)

Re: Trumpet and Soprano works

no piccolo trumpet needed. don't know what you're looking for - but mine is a tonal, romantic tune. Just a simple little tune, with an air of longing.

If you listen at my website, simply imagine the trumpet playing the piano melody at the beginning and end, and you've got it. (I have a recording with trumpet - Bill Campbell - U of M, but I've been away from home for 6 weeks, with no way of accessing the recording).

Re: Trumpet and Soprano works

Sounds good. I still would rather do the Tiefenbach piece at the moment, no offence, but my singer really enjoys the recording of one of the three poems I found, alot. So i will get back to you. I might buy it any way...
