I always though West Side Story was a modern day adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.

No, Shakespeare did not write the plot of Romeo and Juliet himself. It was the stage adaption of a story passed on through generations (like Beowulf). Of course, William Shakespeare may not have even written half the plays that are accredited to him, but that's a completely different topic.
