Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

Chris Martin was 29 when he went to Chicago. He was the principal trumpet of the Atlanta Symphony at age 25.

Man, you're old
Harry Glantz was about Thirteen when he played principal with the Saint Louis Symphony back in the days before there were Child Labor Laws.

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

TMers,

Giuliano Sommerhalder became principal trumpet of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (Leipzig) at 21. http://www.giulianosommerhalder.com/...biography.html

Occasional TM contributor Paul Randall joined the New Orleans Symphony as 2nd trumpet when he was 17 and was appointed principal trumpet when he was 21.

Cheers,
EC (associate principal in Houson at 21 and feeling 2nd class)

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

I recently ran into Sid Baker at a party I was playing. (It seems that's the only place I see him) He is still getting around well and is as warm and kind as ever. I am sorry I never had him as a teacher.

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

IIRC Mr. Smedvig joined the BSO as Associate Principal when he was about 21 years old and became Principal 7 or 8 years later.

Our friend Mr. Laureano started as Principal is Seattle around age 21 and then moved to Minnesota a few years later.

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

So maybe TMs Tom is currently the youngest player holding down a major principal chair in the US. How old is Chris Martin right now?

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

my teacher Paul Goodchild who is currently associate principal trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra landed 4th trumpet in the orchestra at 16 years of age, then auditioned for associate principal and won it at just turing 18.
when i ask him he laughs and says, "i finished my school certificate on friday and began work in the orchestra on monday, i've never been un-employed for a day in my life" haha.. by the way he's a freak player...obvisiously :)
