Justin Timberlake is a HUGE talent.....as is Outkast and Beyonce!

Yeah....they may just be singers....but JT and Outkast are very creative musicians and are very entertaining and fun to watch! A marching band with Outkast....that was just too damn hip! everybody was having a great time making music...that's what it is all about! Beyonce's performance was flawless....

Chick Corea played with Foo Fighters....that had the potential to be very cool...but ended up being kinda strange IMO!
I kept wanting Chick to go a little outside...more like he played with miles. He just kept playing the same line over and over.....oh well!

A very cool Grammy Night!

Timber-Porn-Lake...A huge talent? For what?

A HUGE TALENT!!! for what???? Making money, and for making huge mistakes in common decency???

Talk about a double standard...Timber-toy boy...was invited to the Grammy party....but NOT J.J???? The thread about this in other talk-boards and now in this one...is soooooooooo long, that the rama-ding-a-ling-dongs' must goooooooo all the way back to the story of Adam and Eve.
Poor J. and Eve!!! Same apple???? different vine...maybe not? :?

they can sing...

granted...they may not have a masters or doctorate in music performance. they are simply entertainers...

the purpose of music doesn't always have to be for entertainment...and shouldn't be...

however if the music is not entertaining...good luck making a living playing it...

being a trumpet player i too have the tendency to bash alot of music. if you want to be a good musician you need to discriminate to some extent.

but...being a musician and a pretty good one...i can say that those fools can sing. afterall, music doesn't always have to be intellectual. that alone does not make it good. Arturo is fun to listen to because he does amazing things with a trumpet...the lines he plays are not really that creative either...it's all bad ass technique. and that is fine. i also like cuong vu, ralph alessi, kenny wheeler, tomasz stanko, and a boat load of other trumpet players....they don't all have to do the same thing...

my point is....if you wanna bash lets hear some reason....

other than they're making money.

give me a break...man. do you have any favorite singers.....?

ummm....not jazz singers....?

ummm.....living?

Don't get me wrong, I listen to nearly EVERY type of music (with the only exception of rap, and hell's gonna freeze over and the devil will turn into a penguin before I actually listen to that crap). This includes pop, country, classical, jazz, techno, old rock, acapella, and even some rock. I am probably one of the few people in the world who has walked out of the music store with a Wynton, SRV, and Canadian Brass CD all in one bag. BUT, unfortunately, opinions are gonna differ on this. First of all, I question Timberlake's morals (not many questions left there now, huh). Personally, I find it embarassing considering some of his lyrics and actions. And unfortunately this goes for many of today's "popular" artists. Oh sure, the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync all had nice harmonies and could dance, but did you notice the total LACK OF VARIETY!? For cryin out loud, I couldn't hardly tell them apart. And no, I will fight this to my death, Spears can't sing. What you hear is severly modified through computers, amplifiers, synthesizers, etc. By herself, the girl just can't sing. And again, this goes with many of the"pop" artists. I just simply can't stand some of the stuff that somehow actually wins awards or becomes popular.

If it walks n talks like a duck???

Fret-not!!!
YOU, ME...ALL OF US!!! Sandoval would be the first to advocate that in America..freedom of speech is such a blessing:

If you love TL or JJ or Sandoval or Kiddyrockhead! GO FOR IT!
Some trash is anothers treasure and I defend your basic right to enjoy or bash, whatever or whom eva...an all that jazz.

The criminal and crime in all this Tidybowl and Grammy-whammy stuff..still smells like a clam that belongs strickly to CBS!
I think that the MTV crowd...JJ or TL or KiddyRockhead...owes no one an apology. Instead how refreshing..if CBS WENT ON RECORD AND GAVE EVERYONE WHO WAS OFFENDED A PERSONAL APOLOGY INSTEAD...bare-boobie-bottom line:

CBS should have known...that old saying:
If it waddles like a duck, poops like a duck, smells like a duck, quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, etc etc etc......with that in mind. Yes! Perhaps they could bank on it that???? in truth. IT MUST BE A DUCK!
Enough SAD AND DUNG!!!! RIGHT!

well, what I meant was that the general public does not like instrumental music. I don't know why, being as such, I love jazz and classical and soundtracks.

The big show of the night for me was George Clinton and the PFD. Then when all the bands got together at the end and the horns were blowin over the singers. Now that was awesome......

You all are much tougher than I am! :-)

My hat's off to all of you. I can't watch the grammies any more. People like Timberlake and Jackson and Spears all get called "musicians." I can't stand that. Can they play an instrument or write music? Heck, can they even READ music? Yet the grammies, a MUSIC awards organization puts these people on a pedestal as though they have actually accomplished something of lasting value.

When I hit the tread mill during the winter months I like to watch movies. I've been re-watching the Ken Burns series, "Jazz" and I just finised the 'umpteenth' viewing of Eastwood's flick, "Bird." There was a time when popular music had a mix of good music and cutting edge stuff, like the transition between big bands and be bop. Now, it's too bad folks like Parker couldn't get rich doing what they were doing, but that wasn't for lack of air play and recording. There's a great line in "Bird" when Chan is lamenting their financial woes by commenting on all the records Parker has sold. Parker's (Whitaker's) response was, "I made them, Puddin'! someone else done sold them!" Nevertheless, popular music was at some point of a fairly high quality.

I didn't like everything the Beatle's did (I couldn't stand some of the junk like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," etc.) but they did produce some well crafted melodious stuff. Also, remermber bands like "Yes" and "Emerson, Lake and Palmer" or "Jethro Tull" or even "Led Zepplin?" FWIIW, they we're trying to PLAY instuments and created their own music. They didn't have to hire entire teams of behind the scenes folks to feed them things to do. I can't remember a pop rock band in the past 5 years or even ten years that has done something that is, IMHO truly interesting or unique musically. It's all about production and electronics as opposed to advancing the musical thinking.

And don't get me going about all this lip synch crap! Any act that hasn't got the guts to stand up and perform live will never get a dime from me or even a serious listen.

The grammies represent the sad influence the media and marketing folks have had on what passes for music in the US. If it isn't easy to sell, it isn't going to be heard, no matter how good it is. What does it take to "sell?" Pretty, young "performers" (not musicians) and "tunes" that will never challenge the listeners to do more than jump around a little. Greed, avarice and vanity have gotten a grip on the world of pop music and it is just too easy for those folks to keep up the status quo of mediocrity.

Oh well...

It's sorta funny. I have decided (last summer, actually) to dedicate myself to learning how to play be bop and hard bop. I've given up any hope of symphony work (too "old", sadly enough), so I figured I'd just throw myself into this. Now, when I hear Dixieland or Trad- Jazz, I hear a style that sounds historically old to me, but be bop still sounds fresh. However, I'll bet my kids and students have the same feeling about the be bop I'm trying to learn - old fashioned stuff.

Interesting (well, to ME anyway...), but I don't really care. I'm stickin with it. Maybe someday, this beginner will master some of the Old stuff. I still mess with the ACID jazz thing, on the side, just for fun, but I really want to learn my craft.

I'm done with the grammies all that it represents. I can't regard their little awards as having anything real to say about music.

Peace, all, and may you all keep on making REAL music.

All of this rant is just a bunch of personal opinions, obviously enough. Thanks to the moderators of this forum for letting me fulminate a bit!

Nick
