Thevor,

Typo: I should have said that I DON"T know Pat Hession's playing all that well.

As far as past Maynard lead players, Maynard has had the cream of the crop leading his section ( except never having Dave Stahl in his stable) so only time will tell if Pat Hession is regarded as one of his best.

I don't think it's fair of me ( or anyone ) to rate a player vs. another player,( unless it was obvious tha the wrong man was choosen ) that would be dis-respecting all the wonderful players that have " been there "

It was hard enough to just think of my favorite lead player per band over the 40 years I heard their albums ( yes, my high school friends, I have albums along with CD's, if you don't know what they are, ask your parents )

Pat's got to be very good if he's with Maynard.

Larry

This is another non-big band, but...

Tower of Power: Mic Gillette by far, followed by Mike Bogart

I remember Michael Bogart as a high school kid. What's he doing these days?

The little I know about MikeBogart:

I believe he did a hitch in the Navy, He'd been on Maynards band, recorded on Eric Miyashiro's CD Kick Up playing trumpt & singing on Eric's arrangement of the Chase Tune Get It On.

Mike and Adolfo Acosta re the trumpets with Tower Of Power at present. There are video's (out there in Cyber land) passed around of Mike & Adolfo with TOP.

Send me a private message.

byron stripling

Hi all,

Byron Stripling is a truly remarkable player. I saw him with Count Basie and Ray Charles Big Bands playing lead trumpet and he truly " Swang his a** off " and really got both those great bands to play at top levels.

His jazz playing is also something to hear and IMO,very reminiscent of the late Clifford Brown.( if you can even get close to playing like Clifford )with a touch of Don Fagerquist, west coast pioneer.

If you haven’t seen the video clip of Byron, Chuck Findley, Arturo Sandoval and Randy Brecker with the GRP all-stars check out:

www.trumpetstruff.com/home and click on Byron Stripling and take a look at the " Cherokee " Video clip. As great as the other 3 players play (and are) Byron captures " Clifford " the best for my money.

Byron Stripling
NY Bach trumpet ML- Bach 1 ,Schilke copy Bach 1 rim and C cup/72 backbore

If you want to see a great video of Count Basie with Byron playing lead get " Diane Schurr & the count Basie Orchestra " circa 1987 - trpt section
Byron Stripling, Waymon Reed, Bob Ojeda, Melton Mustafa

It's available at an Amazon or Barnes and Noble. 61 minutes

Byron Stripling

I believe Byron Stripling is most definitely among the commercial/jazz all time greats. It's quite extraordinary that he can do it all on a Bach No 1 or a Laskey variation.
