commakozzi has a spectacular aura about
Bill Evans

I'm transcribing Miles' solos on "Kind of Blue" and really immersing myself into it; working on those songs during my improv sessions, etc. I'm listening to the recordings all day (the whole album, not just what I'm transcribing at the time), and comparing the solo styles of each of the players and taking ideas from all of them. So, I've come to this conclusion: although I love Miles Davis, I'm going to have to say that Bill Evans is my favorite player on this album. His style is just in another world man! Of course, "Flamenco Sketches" is what most people talk about (I think), but listen to his solo on "All Blues"... I think on his second chorus? Could be wrong, but my god it's amazing. It's nothing technically astonishing, it's just his musical interpretation of the changes. Wow!!! No wonder Miles loved him.

Re: Bill Evans

You should get more of Evans' stuff. In the late 60s and early 70s I listened to him a lot. Unique inner voicings and an incredible sense of time and rhythm. He set a standard not matched since, IMO. His style is totally unmistakable. Only Keith Jarrett has come close and I suspect he was heavily influenced by Bill Evans.

Yeah, I've always loved Bill Evans, but have only really listened to him because he was playing on something else I was listening to at the time. Now, I'm definately going to seek his stuff out. His unique voicing is definately inspiring, and I can see where Miles got his influence for "Kind of Blue". Never really thought about it too much, but you know Miles was trying to steer away from the complicated Bebop that was going on at the time (and that's a fact), and I think found his simplicity in Bill Evans. It's cool how you can take the same changes over these tunes and go all "reeky deeky" on them (is that how you say it?) very easily, but then you can go to the far end like Miles and Evans and it sounds so much better to my ear. I mean, I know Evans didn't play on "Freddie Freeloader", and Wynton Kelly almost does go "reeky deeky" on that tune. But Miles is still out there man, even over those blues changes. I'm working on steering clear of thirds, tonics, and fifths, but it's not easy to do as well as they do (Davis and Evans).

He Commakozi & Ian,

You guys should check out Bill Evans "Interplay" if you haven't already. This album has Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Jim Hall on guitar. A win, win , win situation.

I love the arrangement on "I'll Never Smile Again."

I love Bill Evans.
Some of my favorite albums are:

"You Must believe in Spring" - with Eddie Gomez, Elliot Zigmund 1977
"Sunday at the Village Vanguard" - Paul Motian, Scott Lafaro - 1st trio 1961
"We Will Meet Again" - Some really nice Tom Harrell on this Album too. 1979

Obviously there are far too many to mention. I really love the live trio stuff from the end of his life. There is a Box Set, live at the Village Vanguard, 5 cds, with Marc Johnson, and Joe LaBarbera.

df215 will become famous soon enough
Re: Bill Evans

I heard a great story, that Miles used to call Bill Evans up on the phone and get him to put the reciever on the top of the piano and Just play. Just shows how much respect and love he had for Bill's playing. It's awesome
