Lowering a fifth ain't the same as raising a fourth, is it? And it sure won't sound the same! Tom
On a theoretical standpoint, technically the two are different. However the augmented 4th and diminished 5th will sound the same. An F#(aug4th) = Gb(dim5th) in the key of Cmaj. Tecnicaly, I guess, they are different (when you spell out different chords in different keys) depending what degree of the scale it falls on. Then you must account for tuning it (up or down). In that sense they are different. Let me know if I am way off. I am not the biggest theory buff. But I do know a little about enharmonic equivalences. Eric

Eric
ERIC: The 2 notes - flat fifth, or raised fourth, are the same note of course. When I said they would not sound the same I was referring to them in context, i.e. in the piece of music. If you're playing a flat fifth it's over one chord (often the final chord of the piece), and if you're raising a fourth it's over a different chord (and is not usually ending a phrase, or even the tune itself, as a flat fifth often is). That's what I meant. Best,
