ilikethetrumpet-

Thanks for bringing up the Vandermark Five - I've been digging around the Chicago scene recently and I'm a big fan of Mars Williams... Ken is next on my list!

Speaking of "Out To Lunch" - this one's next:

Kelly asked if I'd post this in this thread too. Here it is.

CD Title: Line

Year: 2006

Record Label: 612 Sides

Style: Free Jazz / Avante Garde

Musicians: Kelly Rossum (trumpet); Chris Thomson (tenor/soprano saxophones); Woody Whit (tenor saxophone); Chris Bates (acoustic/electric bass); J.T. Bates (drums)

On the CD “Line” on the 612 Sides label, Kelly Rossum and his quintet creates a free wheeling and colorfully swinging example of the modern avant-garde. This recording has the same kind of energy as Don Cherry’s complete “Complete Communion” and the Anthony Braxton quartet featuring Ken Wheeler.

All but one of these fresh new compositions is penned by Rossum and their musical landscapes draws from new textures (such as drums and bass grooves, and extended instrumental techniques) while still keeping true to the tradition. Whether or not it is implicit in the title “line”, it states much of the musics direction. The linear interaction from the frontline of Mr. Rossum, Woody Whitt, and Chris Thomson is quite engaging while the rhythmic support from brothers Chris, and TJ Bates (from the motion poets) is nothing short of fantastic.

It would be difficult to say that the music on this CD is happy, but it is celebratory in nature. It is a celebration of the symbiosis that exists between these musicians and the music. It’s a celebration that you immediately feel welcome to attend from the first to the last track.

If I were to compare these sonic textures to the visual art world it could be said that “Line” has the open simplicity of a Mark Rothko and the energetic direction of a Jackson Pollock.

“Line” would be a welcome addition to any jazz record collection. Kelly Rossum and his quintet have contributed something interesting and new to the area of jazz dubbed creative improvised music.

Thank you, Kelly.
