![]() | Re: Latin Jazz, getting started Ray Vega plays awesome latin jazz. Arturo does too, Sandoval of course, and Arturo O' Farril, son of the late great Chico O' Farril. Ray Vega can be sen playing some great solos along with Arturo Sandoval in the dvd "Jam MIami, A celebration of Latin Jazz". Everytime i see this dvd I can't help but to see everybody there having a ball. Makes me wish i was there when they filmed it. Sincerely, jrpjazz |

![]() | Re: Latin Jazz, getting started There are some key recordings that any serious student of the music should have, listen to and study. "The Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" (VERVE) Composed and Arranged by Chico O'Farrill featuring The Machito Orchestra with Special guests- Charlie Parker Flip Philips Buddy Rich Check out how "Bird" blows over the Latin grooves. "The Manteca Suite" (I recently downloaded it from iTunes) Original composition by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo Suite composed and arranged by Chico O'Farrill featuring The Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra + a large latin percussion ensemble. Dizzy's playing on this is absolutely masterful. O'Farrill's writing is pure Genius. "Kenya" The Machito Orchestra Arrangements by Rene Hernandez and AK Salim among others. featuring Cannonball Adderley, Doc Cheatom, Joe Newman, Santo Russo This classic 1957 recording showcases some of the best music of this genre. My favorite lead player for this genre is Victor Paz. Manny Duran's trumpet solos on Ray Barretto's "The Other Road" touched my life forever......I Love the music of Jerry Gonzalez and The Fort Apache Band...."Rumba para Monk" is a vital recording. Please go back and check out the posts for this topic by Wilmer Wise and Kevin Bryan. I concur. This is just the begining........more to come. PEACE! |

I'm no virtuoso, but have nbeen playing Latin for many years and also lived and played in Puerto Rico....some good Latin beat there!!!! |
