![]() | Try the Laskey 80S (formerly the * series) I play the 75 series and use the 75* for things like shows and big band. It is the same or similar rim to the 1c. For me it is the only lead type mouthpiece I can even get a sound out of.

| Pianissimo User | If you are interested I have a Curry 1C, 1M, 1 star, and 1Z I'm willing to sell. Just PM me. I've moved to the 3 rim. http://www.currympc.com

![]() ![]() | I used a Bach 3D for everything. I had a large bore Bflat Bach. I was playing in a community concert band and I had everybody playing a Bach C cup except for one of the first players that sat next to me. He didn't have an emboucher so he used a 14a4a. I used a 3D. Our section sounded great as long as the 14a4a didn't show up. His wife was the conductor. A guest conductor showed up and he asked me to lay out for the concert. I did. The 14a4a player pooped out and I sat there and let him die. Everybody in the band knew I should have been playing. As for lead playing. We had a big band and I used the 3D. I had a good F above high C whenever I needed it. Once in concert band I put an A above high C on the end of a tune and the conductor had a cow. Her husband couldn't do that with a 14a4a. I used a good set in the corners and contraction for higher range. I used Colin advanced lip flexibilities and Goldman double and triple tongueing every day to build range and endurance. Unfortunately, I could not get my nerves under control in order to be a consistant player in performance.

![]() | Being a student, I have the opportunity play in many different ensembles with all sorts of different demands. I could be blowing lead in jazz band one night and have an orchestra rehearsal the next morning. Going from the 14a4a to the 1C is just too weird, especially since the rims are so dissimilar. I don't need to switch instantaneaously, but it's always a tough switch back to the 1C even if it's several hours after using the 14a4a. I also don't really like the Schilke. I tend to do better with larger diameter cups. No...I'd never play two different pieces in the same session...

![]() | John, Asking for mouthpiece advice from people that haven't seen you play is a tricky adventure. That being said, I have two pieces of advice: 1) If you're a student, it would make sense that you have a teacher. Please ask your teacher about equipment. Your teacher should know your playing very well, and be a good resource for exactly this type of question. 2) If you're going to play on different mouthpieces (which is fine, I do), make sure you're practicing on both every day. I have seen several students that switch to a 'lead mouthpiece' for jazz band, but that's the only time they play it. If you're not practicing on it, then you'll never feel comfortable. Joey |

![]() ![]() | Her is my two cents. I played on a 14a4a and a 13a4a for awhile. I couldn't play pianissamo if I had to. The tight back bores made air flow too fast to get a good soft tone. I had split tones in a Christmas concert because the cup was too shallow. I was getting extreme loud in my house just doing exercises. About two months into the trial my endurance crapped out. My Bach 3D is a mixture of control I liked for church and lead playing. I use lead playing with apprehension. I wasn't good at it. We played big band for fun. We never did play in public.

![]() | Check around and try to find mouthpieces with a rim similar to your 1 and a shallow cup. If you are "bottoming out" in the shallow piece you might need a rim with a little more bite. That's essentially what I meant in my previous post. My Allen Vizzutti model is about the same as my legit piece but shallow and lots of bite. I can switch back and forth with relative ease.

![]() | Thanks for your advice, everyone. I was visiting a friend in Indiana this past week and got a chance to go to Woodwind Brasswind to try out lead pieces. I finally settled on a Curry 1.5Z. It's not exactly the same rim as my 1C but it's not a huge transition and it's the perfect mix of power and control that I wanted. The 1E was wayyyy too wide. I tried a jet-tone MF just for fun, BOY was that WEIRD!
