Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Tom, Thanks for bringing this back up. There are a few names I'm going to have to check out now. Makes me miss the real discussion that used to go on here (instead of the snarky comments).

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting If you are also going to go down front to solo or play ballads on the trumpet, not the flugal, the fat Doc sound makes more sense to me. Some guys can darken and fatten their cutting sound and some can't or won't. I have heard some great "lazer" players come out front and not make it "to my ears" because of the thin, edgy sound. When they go back in the section they sound great on top the cushion of the inner parts. Last edited by Bob Odneal : 02-17-2007 at 04:12 PM. Reason: spelling......C-

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Thanks for the bump Mr. Turner, classic thread. Just ignore my weird aircraft commentary from 2003, as I must have been on crack, but my vote still goes for big and fat.

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Listen to Mike Williams with the Basie band. Big and Fat even above double C. When he comes down front to do solos on the ballads, he is still big and fat on the ballads. Listen to "Warm Velvet" on the "Swing Shift" CD, a tune written for him by Allyn Ferguson. Great ballad work, then listen to "Four For Basie" on the same CD. All four trumpet players take 24 bars up tempo. Great player -cw-

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting If you are a pro lead player, you have a specific function. Your sound is the leading edge of every brass attack. It has to complement the section first and distinguish the player second. I think ANY of the great players mentioned would do whatever they needed to to make the section sound correct. I do not think that any of them were so inflexible that they could be "categorized" as laser or sumo lips. |

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Well, my idea of the Lead Trumpet sound was fixed into my brain over forty years ago when I first heard Java, Cotton Candy, Up Above my Head, Fly me to the Moon amoung many many others from a Big Big Man named Al Hirt. Yes he was commercial. Many have said he was not a legit player. My trumpet professor in college despised the man. Me, Al was my hero. The sound I wanted to have and for the most part I have it. Took me a while but I finally have it (for the most part).

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Yep, Mike's schedule has the Basie Band at Muskogee High School,7:30-9:30. Mike is very approachable, tell him Chuck Willard says hi. -cw- Check out the new 3rd player. I believe Mr. Edmonds quit real recently! Last edited by Solar Bell : 03-20-2007 at 04:32 PM.

Re: Lead Trpt Sound - "big and fat "or " cutting Been working in the Salsa, Latin Jazz scene for many years now and this is the great fat sound that most players aspire to. No room for the laser, thin high notes here. Arturo Sandoval is the one that comes to mind and arguable the greatest. Nevertheless, he is a virtuoso and a musician, in every meaning of the word. But yes, the fat sound is good! <b> <font size=7>LATIN TRAIN PRODUCTIONS <br> <fONT SIZE=5>Latin Jazz & Salsa Arrangements
